If I ever went to Japan, I'd want to go to the beautiful rural towns in the countryside instead of some overcrowded, noisy, glass and metal-building-packed cities.
(sees the size of rats in the countryside)
Actually its too late.
No no... That's just a friendly Capybara.
It used to be called Honmien, meaning 'where the light settles.' Hon meaning light, and mien being a pool where leylines gather. Or just a central pool the watershed feeds into. "Where the light gathers" might be a more accurate translation, although many might disagree.
The 12th century linguistic reforms led to a lot of cities being renamed, to match the new language standards. Some older families may still call it Honmien, but I remember hearing that the government wanted to stamp that out in the 70s and 80s. Don't know if people still do it.
You've probably seen the city square in an anime, or recognize the ferry crossing from Kamichu! The central government approved a handful of cities for production references, and because of the way the light settles Onomichi became pretty popular as a reference setting.
It also kind of looks similar to a bunch of other ocean-river cities, so when they want to draw the Yamato on tour they usually straighten Onomichi's river out and put it there.
I plan to go back there soon.
Edit: After doing a quick look through a search engine, Takayama, Otaru, Hagi, Toyama seem like nice small towns.

Osaka is near Kyoto:

And isn't far away from Himeji Castle and Arima Onsen. Himeji Castle is the largest castle in Japan:

I hear it's the worst city in Japan.
