San Andreas is a different beast though. It's the perfection of the formula that made up the old trilogy. The music, the atmosphere of each region, the challenges, the cheat codes, and the side-activities were the best the series has ever had to offer.
It's not like the game was dated in all, or even most aspects by Grand Theft Auto 4, or even 5. You're wrong if you think it was.
That's not to say nobody considers it the best because others do, but there's good reason people do remember it as the best.
"Boss, someone is criticizing our favorite game! What do we do?"
"Go onto their profile, find a game, and make fun of them for playing it. This will discredit their entire argument, and make them ashamed to even show their face."
"Got it. That's why you're the best, boss!"
It is the only game that met my expectations and massively surpassed them.
imo that is the main reason people speak fondly of andreas.
but there is also the sense of scale and wonder that comes with being able to travel seamlessly between different cities, even if the content is admittedly a bit stretched because of it.
also, San Andreas introduced a lot of game mechanics now taken for granted in similar titles, such as customizing cars and player clothing/looks.
so it innovated, while many modern games merely imitate.
so given how much of a game changer GTA:SA was at the time, it is no wonder people speak fondly of it, in a sense it is to open world games what Half Life was to FPS games.
in newer ones it's more modern
truly the 90's era theme'd game with iconic similarities and soundtrack PLUS THE CARS really did it for the game
not to mention all the mods that came out of it.
At this point rockstar fiddles with their engine and systems more than anything else. At that time, every game was building on top of the last one. They were making ♥♥♥♥ and selling it. Idk wtf they do now.
