Why do Unitedstatians call their sport football if they use their hands?
I mean, the "ball" doesnt even looks like a ball, it looks like an egg. Why not call it Handegg?

You don't get to name people. We're Americans. America is in the country's name. United States of America. It's not Mexico of America or Canada of America or Brazil of America. That's why they aren't called Americans.

And American Football is called that because it didn't start off with the ability to pass forward the ball by throwing it. When it originated, it was much more similar to football games from Europe.
People from Europe are Europeans.
People from Asia are Asians
People from America are Americans.

The United States of American Football is like the Sony of countries.

Everyone else has a system and it works well and it's universally accepted. Then they come along with a different system and insist everyone pander to their BS.

Everyone else had a game called Football, played with a ball and a foot. Not a difficult concept, right? Then in the US they have a game played with an egg and hand and they don't call it Hand Egg. They call it Football and insist everyone else call it Football, even though Football already exists, and is not Hand Egg.

People from the Americas are North American or South American. There's also Central American. People from the United States of America are Americans.

Football is a generic term, back in the days of yore parish rivalries were settled with various contests including groups of men getting the ball from one parish to the other. Kick it throw it dive on it whatever it took. Fast forward to Rugby school in England playing their version of football a student called Ellis lifted the ball and ran with it thus making the sport of Rugby.

Gridiron or US football/American football is just an updated variation of inter parish rivalry with set rules. Association football AKA soccer is an acronym, the English didn't invent 'football' they just made up the set of rules which were adopted globally and the ball can be handled by players other than the goalkeeper, A throw in is a legit handling of the ball.

I have no idea why. It's actually a special version of rugby. Calling it American rugby would be the most obvious thing to do. It has no logical connection with football and I haven't heard anyone explain it logically.

I just did call it American Football. And it's because I'm speaking with people that use the word football for something else. When we discuss it here in the United States, it's just Football because our word is Soccer. It's not laziness.

If anyone is being lazy in this scenario it's people being obtuse about the topic.
OP said it this way. And like others said it´s probably been asked like a billion times. So i´m unsure how anyone can take the topic serious.

But here we don´t call the sport anything if we talk about it, as everybody knows which sport is meant. So it´s not the "football match", it´s the match. It´s not the "football player", it´s the player, it´s not the "football club", it´s the club, it´s not the "national football team", it´s the "national team". It´s not the "football" - it´s the "ball", and so on. Of course in rare cases we use the actual word, or some clubs have it in the name. Usually people who dislike the sport call it "football", or "these loud and drunken football fans..."

This. :steamthis:
If France had named themselves the Untied Provinces of Europe, it would be just as silly as the USA name.

No, it's actually worse than that. You see, big US corporations split the world into two regions: US and OUS. The latter is regarded as this vestigial addition which can pick up the scraps left by the former.

That was the 3M outlook when I worked there.

What do Germans call themselves? What do Chinese, Japanese, and Korean people call themselves? What do Latin Americans call themselves, and what do they call us? Exonyms aren't a big deal.

Lovely humans. Sometimes brothers and sisters. Family.

Sucks that flopper is only recognized by poor, 3rd world countries. How many years do you have to train to fall on the ground, clutch your leg and cry like a baby professionally?

Don't get me wring, actual real world football is the most boring thing since Golf. It's exclusively played by absolute tosspots who are paid more in a week than most people earn in their lives, to prance around like a Prima Donna.

Plus, it's their job to kick a ball into a net, right? How often do they even do that? If I came to work and just didn't do my job, I'd get fired.

This is one reason I don't care to watch sports. He kicked a goal! Yawn. That's his job. Play games instead.
