What happened to today's children?
I'm planning on either education or meteorology as a career. I have been watching videos and reading articles to try to get an inside view on both careers to see if they are for me, and a lot of the videos from teachers aren't even about teaching. A good chunk of them are about how horrible the behavior of generation alpha is, and the rest are talking about how they aren't performing at grade standards. One guy even said that a vast majority of his seventh grade class struggles to read and comprehend on a fourth grade level. Is any of this true? Does anyone know why this is happening?

I worked as an ESL educator in South Korea for 15 years. Before that, I worked as a special education teacher in NJ. That was a long time ago. TBH, your experience if you decide to go into teaching is going to be decided by a few things. 1. Management; your principal, and superintendent. I've been in situations where the school principal makes the job of the educators very difficult. If you look on YouTube, the main reason teachers leave the profession is management. 2. Parents. Now, it depends on where you are teaching. Parents can be quite overbearing. They will blame you for the shortcomings of their child. If you don't have the backing of your principal it can make your job very bad. 3. Pay is another issue. The blue states are much better at pay, but teaching still doesn't pay all that well. If you're in a red state you will probably be working side jobs just to pay the bills. $40-50k a year just doesn't cut it anymore.

Teaching today can be difficult in America. I would tell anyone thinking about going into the profession to give it a second thought. In regard to income, and yes income is important today, I'd go into a career that pays much better. My sister is a computer programmer. She works at home, makes $180k a year, loves her job, and doesn't have to put up with parents and never has to take home extra work.

And oh yea.. The behavior of American children today is horrible. Education in America is not valued. American parents do not value education, and its why we are seeing this behavior in their children. The disrespect. Not every child of course. There are also some very good kids. But, teachers are not valued anymore. In America at least. I taught in South Korea and the parents there were so kind, and only demanded the best. Then again, in Asia education is paramount. Its everything. Korean parents will spend hundreds of millions on their child's education. Everything from tutors, hagwons (private schools), etc. Its why Korean students go to school for 12 hours a day. Its a very competitive environment.

I can only speak for my own area and why the kids are basically scumbags, they aren't disciplined or taught respect.
Americans did value education, they sent everyone to college, until having a college diploma wasn't much more special than having a high school degree. And if their kid wasn't smart enough, they'd yell and scream until they did get in somewhere.

And colleges like money, they can create courses that are easy, that don't have as much math. Like artist or gender studies.

If the government makes sure everyone can go to college, colleges can jack up prices. And then masses of people can go into debt to the government. (And then the same government that created the problem can buy votes by saying they'll forgive your college debt if you vote for them).

And if everyone can go to college, every job can want you to have a college degree, even if your washing dishes :lolFumi:

If everyone can go to college, and not just the best and the brightest, its the new normal, nothing special.

Also, when your retirement comes from the government, rather than your children. Does it matter as much if your kids fail? You're still taken care of. If your life depends on one of your 5 kids ending up a doctor or lawyer so that you aren't homeless in your later years, are you going to care about their education or not? Or are you going to have 0-1 kids and be like "Ehh, I'm sure they'll turn out fine, Maybe they'll be a youtuber".

We do think some of the problem is parents. Pushing for better grades resulted in no kid left behind. That turned skools into 'Pass the scantron" or else.

And parents upset other kids are in the Gifted classes, and not their kids.

Then the whole marxist thing that wants everyone dragged down, face down to the lowest dirt hole so everyone is "equal".

And progressivism making both parents work, means no one is home to push the kids. Or worse, its a single parent family that can offer very little support, since the one parent is always busy.

Bit hard for a kid to care about an education when they're in ptsd from the divorce.

Blame video games :steamhappy:
What happened to today's children?

Today's parents.

(probably also smartphones & social media. Which goes back to today's parents, if you think about it.)

Is it so different to be raised by the Tv, than to be raised by the computer?

The kids raised on the radio had to use their imaginations at least. And one benefit of the radio is you could get up and move around, look in any direction, not be tied to looking at a single spot, or sitting in one.

No it is all violent video games to blame. And Harry Potter. And D&D. And Video Nasties. And Rock and Roll (especially the Beatles). And allowing rude words on TV. And not having an hour gap in TV programming for parents to get their children to bed easier. And people that wear leather jackets and ride motor cycles. And Hippies. And those Flappers showing off their calves. And people not respecting the nobility as their superiors...

Smartphones and google ruined critical thinking. The expert fallacy is a thing... apparently everyone is now an expert on everything, so the internet is flooded with a tonne of garbage misinformation.

From what I have seen, heard, and read, your estimation is correct. Take a look at what those concerned, like businesses and corporations who must have new hires from this pool, have to say about it. You'll get some pretty unbiased answers, since they care greatly just about potential performance. (Businesses/corps are the end-point "consumers" of what the schools produce.)

Public schools in the US also appear more heavily motivated to relax performance standards than ever before.

In the US, many States allow degreed professionals to teach, provided they meet the necessary criteria and obtain a Teaching Certificate via their professional tract. So, in essence, you can become a degreed professional in the Sciences and get a Teaching Certificate, later, if you feel like you wish to Teach. (Provided your'r in the US and your State allows for that.)

PS: On performance, the last info I read was that current graduates in the job force do have necessary performance skills for their task, but a broader ability for other skills isn't necessarily evident. That's especially true with social and communication skills as well as basic... instructional comprehension... As in, they know their skills, but they don't know what they're supposed to do when directed to perform them... (Non-Self-Starters)

Of course curriculum is dumbed down. If your goal is more kids graduation, you have two ways to achieve that. Be better at actually teaching more of them the skills they need to pass the tests, or make the tests easier and teach them less. Which route do you think our public education system went?

exactly.

everyone thinks they 'know' everything about everything all because they can tap a button on their phone and get fed feeds on w/e info fits w/e agenda they are trying to push or defend.

Take away peoples phones/internet and the current gens know literally ~ nothing ~. If they cant get out there phones to 'let me check' or 'wait let me look it up' they are completely LOST.

when the grid goes down the youngsters are completely going to collapse. they have zero actual skills or knowledge. even basic things around the house. totally lost w/o 'let me check on google'. Now they aren't even graduating with basic reading, math, thinking skills . being groomed to be manipulated by whatever side they vote for.

a society that is 100% reliant on a crutch 24/7 is hella worrisome. But that's okay becasue its all just a meme and a big joke. hur hur derp

sad.
