Yes but knowing two things are exactly the same requires comparison. So people who like to compare apples with other apples, I ain't mad at em. It's a thankless job.

Because they look and taste completely different? It's like comparing a car to a bike.

In French, it's actually comparer des pommes et des poires (to compare apples and pears) or comparer des choux et des carottes (to compare cabbages and carrots).

If Spanish, it's comparar papas y boniatos (to compare potatoes and sweet potatoes) or comparar peras con manzanas (to compare pears and apples).

The saying actually varies around the world, but it's meaning is the same. Don't compare two different things as being the same, attempting to justify one with the other.

No, they are both spherish fruits and both have some level of sweetness and acidness to them

Yeah so what? A car and a helicopter are both vehicles that use fuel, doesn't mean you should compare them

you can compare them, but whichever one's "better" is completely subjective.

The idiom, comparing apples and oranges, refers to the differences between items which are popularly thought to be incomparable or incommensurable, such as apples and oranges. The idiom may also indicate that a false analogy has been made between two items, such as where an apple is faulted for not being a good orange.

TLDR; It's just an expression to say that two things are so different that comparing them is pointless.

Like a Racing Game and an RPG.
Thanks, i still cant say i agree with it though. I like both rpg's and racing games and i just consider them different flavors of game, they both scratch different itches while sharing traits that they use in different ways.

Yes it is

In European French the idiom is comparer des pommes et des poires (to compare apples and pears) or comparer des choux et des carottes (to compare cabbages and carrots). The former is the same as the German Äpfel mit Birnen vergleichen.[1]

Saying, "It's like comparing apples to oranges," isn't the same as saying, "These things cannot possibly be compared and contrasted whatsoever." It just means it wouldn't be useful in the context of whatever is being discussed, not that it couldn't ever be useful.

In the RPG to racer comparison, I could complain that the driving controls in some RPG are not as good as the driving in some actual racing game; and someone could say it's not a good comparison, that's like apples and oranges.
That's just fruity!
