If there's ever any money in my Steam wallet it's because whenever I'm given those little trading card things when you play a game enough, I put them on the marketplace. It'll acrue $0.04 to $0.07 slowly every few weeks. Once I get enough (like $1 or whatever) I use it for when one of my wishlist games goes on a super sale where it's under $9 and just use it towards that.
So now I only put in a $20 wallet card just before I buy something, and then use the rest to open my pile of TF2 crates.
Its a shame I can't use my multiple hundreds of thousands of steam points to buy a Steam Deck though.
I top up my wallet too when I can and also rely on building up with selling the card drops you get from games like Chaosolous mentions above.
I have a problem with blowing it too soon though. It's just too easy to enjoy the purchasing process, doh.
I just burn those credits for card crafting.
Plus, if your account was ever stolen, the person who stole it could buy an item from their actual account through the market if you had money just sitting in your wallet. And unlike buying a game, Steam wouldn't reverse a market transaction.
Max limit is $2k. I'm nearly there now.
Ah. I never knew that and I'm guessing I'm not alone
