If the Internet suddenly disappeared forever...
No more Discord, no more social media, no more OF or Twitch or Steam, no more monthly contract bills for intermittent services, no more cellphones, no more Bluetooth or IoT. The entire world just suddenly goes back to 1970s technology.

How would it change your life?

I mean, it'd be easier for me to get my pain medication but we'd be heavily set back in terms of mass manufacturing, farming, healthcare, etc.

But hey.... gaming cafes will be pretty lit tho. Since it's the only place other than home we can play games together.
I still remember pipe bombing the VP of my employer in Duke Nukem 3D over and over because he kept thinking it was a pick-up. He fired me about 4 years later. Probably unrelated.

LAN gaming was pretty fun though. If someone was an ass, you could just fire them four years later...

Would not change much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, however given how reliant modern tech is of the internet (specially many industries example banks), there's going to be a lot of chaos in the short term.

It would be fine. I would do other things. The internet's only been available to everyone since 1994 so it's not even that old.

If you lived during the 60s, 70s, 80s, or half of the 90s, you would be just fine.

The younger generations would lose their minds though, including most of GenZ.
Well, it is not just a matter of personal habits /addiction, we are, at least partly, forced to use the internet

- The last few years I was in school: All assignments submitted online

- The local bank? Near impossible to get human help on-site, and only during ordinary work hours (when I work), and you probably have to wait an hour or so for help if you just drop in, otherwise you have to get an appointment first. Also, if the "internet bank" goes down, it apparently also effects auto-payments, so I'd have to do like in the old days and show up at the bank to pay my regular bills (which are all on separate days of the week. Ugh).

The main applications we use 90% of the time at my workplace are internet based.

PS Payment systems in nearly all stores... does it work via the internet? If so, good luck buying stuff the first few weeks until they get around to the old-fashioned way

...

Apart from all of that. I guess I have to read books more often (Now I'm down to about one a month, which isn't much)

It wouldn't change life too much, I would just be reading physical books instead of digital books and digital apps

It wouldn't. I'd go back to using the phone book, dialing for a pizza, and going to the store to buy movies instead of streaming.
I would go outside, just to laugh at all the idiots with their "smart" crap that breaks down because it requires internet.

Smart doesn't technically require "internet" though, just a router and the app usually; As long as there's a wireless connection between App and Appliance, it'll work. It'll only be when trying to access the Appliance from 50 miles away that won't work.

It's much like a wireless car key really.

Ofcourse, no banking, payments, transfers etc.. would cause some serious disruption, not to mention people being unable to buy food since lots of people have no physical money anymore.
If this did happen, it would be riots when people start getting desperate for food....
Books. So many books.

The internet has always been there in my life, so it would be hard to imagine life without it. I think it would be interesting to try it though. Like a detox routine.
Candyy 24 Thg03, 2024 @ 8:06am
For those thinking they can easily survive without internet just becuase "they (themselves) used to do it in the past" they clearly forget a couple things:

1. Times are different now, you cannot just turn 2024 into 1970 instantly like if is magic...

2. You are not the same one as 20/25 years ago, change in most aspects of yourself is INEVITABLE, just becuase you did not used internet in the past does not mean nowadays becuase you alredy got used to use something better (internet in this case) and you are not going to be able to just be able to go back to something primitivo...

Also is funny to me those responses I sometimes see that go like "I would go outside more!" acting like if internet has them prisoned on their rooms or tied up to their bed... Nothing stops you from going outside if you want to and convincing ppl is not hard either (even as a social anxious person myself... :steambored:)

Also I cannot take seriously ALL these ppl that are like "internet is unnecesary" or "I do not use/need internet" BUT YOU SEE THEM CONSTANTLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA :steambored:

And little reminder that this website is as social media as Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc... combined... :steambored:
I was born decades before the internet existed. I'd manage.

If you think 30 years old is not old... 🙄
