I Hate Anime so Much
Anime is without a doubt one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world. Its mainstream success and worldwide popularity has made it a recognizable art form that everyone has seen or at least heard of. Seeing animation from a foreign country become extremely popular all around the world is something I find really cool as people get to experience art representing various cultures and gives them an opportunity to try something new. One of my best friends is even a fan of several anime. He loves it so much that he's even made a lot of sketches of characters from various anime and I'll admit, he's a heck of a lot more talented than I am at drawing. Despite my respect for the impact anime had on the entire world, I hate it with a burning passion. Almost every single time I've attempted to watch a well-liked anime, I always drop it few episodes in because I hate it so much. I've tried watching all the popular anime: My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, Re:Zero and Tokyo Ghoul. Let me tell you, I did not enjoy a single moment of any of these shows I listed. Some people might say "you're just looking in the wrong places". Well, the problem is that these shows come across various genres and demographics. I've tried shonen, I've tried seinen and I've even attempted isekai. However, I can't find any sense of satisfaction from watching anime from these genres.

Everything about the anime I've seen is just so... convoluted, boring, poorly-written and frustrating. My Hero Academia is one of the most generic superhero shows I've ever seen, yet it's praised for its "creativity" and "well-developed" characters. Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer are extremely underwhelming, despite both having an emphasis on heavy action. Re:Zero is so confusing that I can't see how anyone could understand it, maybe I just don't have a high enough IQ to appreciate its complexity. Then there's *shudder* Tokyo Ghoul which might just be the worst out of all the anime I've ever watched. If there's one term I can use to describe Tokyo Ghoul, it's torture porn. I'm not kidding. There isn't a single moment in that show where a character isn't suffering, crying or dying in one of the most horrific ways possible. The only redeeming qualities I can find in any of these shows are some gorgeous animation, stunning action scenes, surprisingly impressive voice acting (even from the dubs) and downright incredible opening and ending theme songs.

However, the worst part of anime is its obnoxious and toxic fanbase. Now, I don't want to group every anime fan into the same category as like I've stated before, one of my best friends loves anime and I have even met some online who are pretty cool people. Just because one likes anime, that doesn't automatically make them a terrible person with no taste. Being a fan of anything doesn't and shouldn't dictate one's identity or how others should treat them. Despite that, there's also been times where I've met some truly insufferable people from the anime community. I've encountered them in online games, forums and Youtube comment sections. Unfunny memes, needless arguments and lack of any thought in discussions are reasons for why I avoid some (not all) anime fans (especially those that have a PFP of a w*m*n :steamfacepalm:). There are also anime Youtubers I see on the home page who produce some of the most clickbait and reaction-driven videos on the platform, Hero Hei is one that immediately comes to mind. I don't mind anime existing, what I have a problem with is people treating it like the second coming of Jesus and attacking anyone who criticizes it. It's gotten so bad to the point where one of my roommates in a boarding school shamed me for not liking it. I hate anime, I hate it with a burning passion. I don't usually like to hate on things to an extreme degree, but here, I just can't take it anymore. I can't stand seeing it everywhere I go, I want to express how much I loathe it, but for a long time I couldn't because I don't want to upset those who genuinely enjoy it.

Unlike other so-called 'anime haters', I'm not here to put others down for enjoying the medium. I also don't dislike anime just for the sake of it, in fact, I want to like it and I have moderately enjoyed some parts of it. A few weeks ago, I started watching Death Note which is actually pretty damn great based from what I've seen so far. For one, it doesn't fall victim to common anime tropes, its characters are memorable and go through a lot development and the mystery was genuinely compelling. It's not perfect as some of the dialogue, especially monologues, are kinda pretentious, but that's the only major complaint I have with Death Note. There's also Akira, an anime film that is hands-down one of the best animated movies I've ever seen. A lot of my favorite media from the west also take inspiration from anime, so if the medium didn't exist, my favorite western shows probably wouldn't either. I know I've already gained at least a dozen enemies just by making this post, but I just had to vent about it.

It's understandable. It's not easy to get into. Unless something just grabs you and draws you in. Plus, the vast majority of anime released isn't worth watching. It takes a lot of digging to find good stuff.

I'm curious as to whether you are watching subs or dubs. It makes a big difference. First, the voice actors are sometimes better in one version or the other. Second, the subtitles can convey more information and context. This is often lost in an effort to fit with the lip sync.

If that's not enough? I don't know what to tell you. The writing and plots may be a little shallow. But I think all the positives make up for it.

Oh, yeah. I totally know what you mean.

Take note those of you actually reading this. Have a look at what all the anime fans posted in this thread. They act like a bunch of spoiled brats. Trolling because someone dared to critique their cartoons.

Ran afoul of these monsters over on Crunchyroll. Like you, I give a detailed and nuanced view. They can't handle that.

In response they downvoted my posts and my reviews. They also went to things I reviewed, and spammed short reviews. Almost all of which are infantile **** like, "I really enjoyed this, and I just know that you'll like it too. I'm just typing this to get to the character minimum." Or they literally just type a bunch of random keys. They don't even review. All that just to try to get at me and bury my review. (As you can only sort reviews by age or popularity on Crunchyroll.)

You should be checking out anime movies from the 70's and 80's. A ton of them have the look and feel of Akira. Highly detailed and complex animations combined with insane stories and strange twists.
Thank god, I can sit and eat some snacks while enjoying my favorite animes.

Ranma, Code geass, Attack on Titan.

There are a lot of genre in anime. You just tried the newest popular shonen anime, which are overhyped imo.

Maybe try older animes like Death Note or Evangelion

Yeah but the amount of kids that think they're L after watching Death Note is ridiculous.

That's why the ol "Anime pfp irrelevant" thing, is a thing. They heavily borrow personalities from their favorite characters.

You got the three main anime pfp kids:

The creepy incel young girl anime pfp weirdo

The smug, pretentious, eyes-half-shut "im super intelligent, I took a free online IQ test" anime pfp. (theyre actually not smart)

Or the edgelord pfp, where they make it look as emo/dark as possible. These are apex incels. These are the equivalent to Joker incels who are obsessed with DC

AI Generated or not, OP is right dawgy

There is nothing wrong associating with anime characters. Annoy someone else
Well, I mean, principally speaking, there is no reason any television show ever made could not have been an anime. It's just that for anime, it is drawn in motion, and the point of origin is Japan. Those are the only fundamental differences.

Regarding Fate/Zero, I haven't seen it myself, but it is a prequel. It may be working on the assumption that you already had adequate exposition from the events of Fate/Stay Night for some matters, and other aspects of it may be trying to answer questions you had never asked in the first place.

The Fate Series is basically the the Highlander meets Pokemon. The highlander part is that supernatural beings fight in a war amongst themselves until only one remains for a supernatural reward. The pokemon part is that these supernatural beings are more-or-less bound to obey the orders of a master in battle, like how pokemon obey their trainers. The Story of Fate/Stay Night is a story of how Shirou Emiya accidentally found himself entrenched in one such war, so it is a highly expository show.

This might also be why you like Death Note better. It's written so that people follow along with the established set of rules. Imagine if you heard about Death Note, but instead of watching it from the beginning and learning all of the rules of the Death Note, you skipped straight to episode 7 without learning a thing about what is going on in the show. You wouldn't understand what kind of head games Light was playing head games with Shoko Maki or why.

I do not think watching Fate/Stay Night will remedialize the convolutedness of Fate/Zero now. You would probably find yourself unable to prevent yourself from trying to piece together information you obtained prematurely with Fate/Zero with Fate/Stay Night, and that would only make things seem more convoluted, rather than less. I am just trying to help explain how somebody might be able to understand what is happening, since you expressed curiosity on the matter.

In any case, it is rather tempting for me to make my own recommendations, but I shall refrain. You've given it a shot and it is your perogative to like what you like, and dislike what you dislike. Being pushy never particularly helps matters and my opinion on the matter is unsolicited anyway.

Perhaps this is just a subcategory of the first one, but it seems to me you forgot the pervy kid who uses closeups of a woman's breasts, butt or crotch as their profile pic and then wonders why the moderators deleted it.

You dont have to watch it.
fyi for op, although I haven't watched it, you might like Robotech. It has the art style that Anime uses, but it's made for an American audience.
