Larger sizes won't save it from failure, it'd be better to have multiple in case one fails you'd just be replacing the one which will be cheaper.
Always better to spread out the stresses also.
- Data duplicated across multiple drives. (So, if just one fails you lose nothing)
- Some cold drives (powered off) or other cold storage. This protects against bitrot and also ensures your stuff can't get wiped out by ransomware or the likes.
But you forgot about data access speed. Larger the size, slower the search. If your PC spec can handle 2 HDDs running at the same time that exceeds speed of 1 large HDD, you may want that.
And as others have said, better to keep your data spread between the 2 HDDs in case of disk failure.
LIke get one 1T ssd or so for your OS and the Games your currently play and one larger HDD to store stuff you dont actually use but want to keep.
Or if you got more money to spent get a 2T SSD instead of a HDD for way more comfort
It's really worth it
I always use at least 2 disks in raid 1.
this ensures I not loose data while reading and writing goes faster.
(at the expense of having to buy 2 disks while only having the storage capacity of 1)
**
I usually buy 2 large disks that are the cheapest per gb I can find..
currently 2x10TB hd fit that role for me.
I than use 1 much faster (and more expensive) disk as main disk to install my stuff on.
in olden days this was an 10000rpm disk or scusi disk.. later sata3 ssd and now m.2
currently an 4tb m.2 fills this role.
finally I buy a 4th disk.. thats one thats picked for reliability.. it is selected for the most durable.. lowest chance at failed sectors etc.,.
my most vital information is backed up on this disk and I keep it in an external housing..
-
an 1tb ssd in an external housing serves this role today
(this data is also on the 10tb hd's for redundancy)
finally I have a second backup.. it is made periodicly... it is ment as the absolute last line of failure.
I may loose some data but not all if it comes to this.
-> in the past I used floppy's, zipdisks, cdr, and dvdr for this..
today I use an 1tb usb for this role..
main disk : for all I instal
2d & 3d disk in raid 1 : for all data
4th disk (external) backup of data
5th disk (external) long term backup of data
