It should be noted that E.T.'s reputation isn't really deserved. Atari Pac-Man was even worse, and was actually guilty of some of the things E.T. is accused of, like more cartridges than consoles in existence being ordered.
But ultimately, 3rd party shovelware and market saturation were the biggest causes of the Crash of 83.

I'm certain all the "early access" games on steam don't count... because they're not games yet.
Those cartridges were buried in an unmarked grave in the desert.
I knew a guy in grade school who had it.
It was the only Atari game him parents let him play.
Some worthy challengers indeed mentioned above.... but I would go with 1982's E.T the video game for the Atari 2600.

And yet that piece of ♥♥♥♥ from the 1980s has fans who have made at least one game that is it's spiritual successor, which may or may not have gotten a Steam release. Thanks, I hate it.
