It's multifactorial, meaning it can be caused by many different things, one primary thing and a bunch of tertiary factors, or just one prominent cause. And if it's clinical, it can also have no discernable external cause at all. It can just happen, or someone can be predisposed to it. The brain isn't magical. It can become ill like the rest of the body.

Though I will say, for a lot of people I know personally, disillusionment about the world, their future in contrast to what they grew up believing the world was like, and - especially - chronic health issues, disabilities, etc. are huge contributing factors.
