They are subject to the same criteria that any other potential friends would, being a furry is not a disqualifying factor. The few that I have met are perfectly good people and wouldn't be discernible as a furry unless they told you or you got to know them.

I don't understand why they receive so much disdain from others.

Why not? They also a human. Also there are many type of friend. It reminds me on one of my favourite qoute. I rather have an honest enemy than a fake friend.

Moot point where I'm concerned. I doubt I'd ever meet a furry IRL as we move in different circles. I've nothing against them though, each to their own.
