Have you tried rise of nations?
"Command and Conquer Generals" is one of my absolute favorites. Pretty much ANYTHING Command and Conquer before C&C4 is great! Especially with all the MODS out there for C&C games. I'd say try out the "shockwave" mod for C&C Generals: Zero Hour expansion.
"Act Of War" is another great game much like C&C Generals. And you can find it on GOG for super cheap.
Supreme commander 2 can have freakishly amazing battles in it, and one of the few RTS games that handle long range fights.
There is also the original Starcraft and its expansions for a great price.
All these should run fine on any mid-low range computer/laptop with an atcual graphics chip on them like Nvidia.
Men of War Assault Squad 2
Company of Heroes 2
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Ruse
Age of Mythology
I enjoyed this one quite a bit. The races are all quite different and good unit variety
Can be a bit too unit spammy sometimes for my likes though
This with others already mentioned is all I can think of that I liked
Well, yeah, the Age of Empires series.

How is Total War not quite the usual RTS (Real Time Strategy)
You control units on a battle map in real time so yes, it is Definitely an RTS
Honestly i think its the most epic rts because of the sheer size of troops you can bring to battle
1 unit on ultra is 160 men if im not wrong
And max units for 1 army is 20 units
And full scale battles with multiple players can support 4x4 players max
You can literally bring a maximum of 12800 troops on a real time map
Altough i dont think any computer can handle the max limit xD
Edit:If your pc is not powerful consider getting the older totalwars (rome1,medieval2)
They are still a blast to play and some consider them bettr than the newer ones
In the TW games, there is much more depth to the over all world, and your armies are persistant.
It's more Real-Time Tactics with some Turn-based Strategy rather than Real-Time Strategy.
