Is it rude to move to a country and never learn the language?
For example, let's say I moved to Germany or Japan, where the primary language is the respective country name. Is it rude if I never learn to speak German or Japanese? How long is too long to be in a country and not learn the language?

Rude? No. When I was at the university many of the PhD students who had been there for years barely knew the language. They just had so much work it didnt leave much time for learning the language when everyone knew English perfectly well. Not that they didnt want to learn, they absolutely did, it just wasnt that high priority on all the things they worked on and the people of my country are good enough at English they just start speaking it automatically, making it harder to learn.

That said, it can help a LOT in just dealing with everyday life. Like just asking for directions or going to a restaurant, it can be good to know. So you still should try and learn it, even if only to make life easier for yourself. Plus its a good way to train the brain.

Its not just rude, not learning their language will only harm yourself.

Learning a language isnt even that hard, you can learn the basic structure of a language in a few months.

In japan, I dont think you would survive more than a month without knowing japanese.

If you are going to live in that country for like 6-12 months or permanently, then learn their language. No one is going to speak english for you

Found the immigrant who is absolutely livid at the expectation of the slightest bit of gratitude to his new host country

Found the simpleton who looks no further than his own ignorant assumptions.

First of all, your profile is irrelevant. I have a profile too... I am well aware that any of us can put just about anything we like in there.

Secondly, hateful bigots are the first people to misrepresent themselves in here. They are all black, disabled, Jewish, homosexuals... didn't you get the memo?

Thirdly, I am not here to educate you on the history of hatred and bigotry in North America. You'll just have to take my word for it that this thread is a watered-down version of a hateful bumper-sticker that has been used by losers for several generations now. I think there was an old punk band that had that slogan for a name... or maybe it was just a song? In any event, I won't be spreading your propaganda for you. Do your own homework.
Behavior matters more than whether you know a language.

Most immigrates that arrived in the UK will try to learn english, this is true. But what I do know, we have many muslim women here who have come from countries such as pakistan, bangladesh etc who can't speak a word of english. Im not sure what the reason is here but the children of these people tend to do all the talking for them.

You clearly missed the "Why is it wrong to be racist?" and "We should tolerate *-phobes to be truely inclusive" threads.

Why dogwistles when they can just scream nonsense here at Steam© Forums?
Steam allows racist & neonazi games in their catalogue that would ban the platform in my country if someone reported them.

Yes, it is rude, but that doesn't stop anyone from doing it.

it's kind of weird how much this conversation always turns to Japan in this forum.

anyone literate, or do you just use machine translation?

It depends, I think. If your goal is to live permanently in another country that does not speak your language, even as a second language, then yes. I would say that is rude. People who do this tend to have the belief that the rest of that country should learn your language. That is rude and rather arrogant.

If, on the other hand, you move to a country where English is as prominant as their own language than no, it would say it is not rude. If I was to move to Canada, for instance, I would not bother learning French. And in certain parts of Canada, French is a primary language. But in those parts of Canada, street signs are often in English and French. (As I understand things. I could be wrong on this) Regardless of if I am correct or not, I think my point is valid.

My Grandma could never learn french when she came here, it can be hard i suppose and maybe not everything is done so they can do it in proper conditions.

In Japan's case they purposefully hamstring foreign education on the language and make it more difficult to learn to discourage immigration.

Many countries do or have done similarly, france coming to mind in the mid-17th century in order to discourage their colonial peoples from emigrating to France.

One could argue that Japan's two-face approach to language education is an indication of the current power strucutre's intent to engage in colonialism, just like berating Japan over this practice is also a form of colonialist thinking.
