What RTS is the best ever?
For me the best i ever played is Starcraft, no doubt. Works great even today and it is free too (optional paid remastered version which is great too). I played it since like early 2000s and spent hundreds of hours playing with friends (yeah not that much i know but almost every minute was great). I wonder if it will ever come to Steam now that Blizzard came here? Starcraft 2 is pretty good as well but not nearly as well made and competitive (in a good way) as the first.

I hope Diablo 2 & 3 and the Warcraft games come to Steam as well.
Diablo is not RTS. It is RPG.

I reported you and sent some farts in a box in your mail.

Age of Empires II is good. I should play it more. All I did was play the tutorial and Scotland campaign.
hard to pick ONE

if I have to I say : Red Alert 2

but honorable mentions for these :
Warcraft III
Rising Lands
Rise of Legends
Total Annihilation
Empire Earth

Age of Empires 2 As it WAS (cdrom version) was also good.. but I not like what they made of it.

You need to play the rest.

The only one I've played an excessive amount of is WarCraft II.

Arguably, I haven' even played any for ages, so I don't even know any current-ish ones.

I laughed in that mission where your leader died and it was not game over but you had to bring him along pickled in a barrel..

Total Annihilation.
I just remembered why i never played 0ad, It's too hard to download.
My personal favourite is "Metal Fatigue". Its main units are custom-made mechs and it has a pretty unique map system with three interconnected layers, each with its own characteristics. The game is far from perfect but at least it's one of the more fun RTS games. It's not micro-intense as Blizzard's RTS games, the pre-build phase discourages cheesy all-in tactics and the balance is surprisingly good (not perfect though). The maps are rather barren and uninteresting, but the animation is incredible. Mechs are reeling from heavy hits, they clash and lock weapons unlike in most other RTS games where models just repeat one or two scripted attack animations. Abd the campaigns are good enough to keep you playing even though not as epic or dramatic as Blizzard's stuff nor as theatrical as Westwood's games.

Starcraft is too much about its meta (there's one viable build order per matchup) and micro.
Red Alert 1 and 2 have great singleplayer content but are awful in terms of multiplayer (Light Tank/Rhino tank spam as only viable strategies). Warcraft II and III are also much better as singleplayer experiences.

For multiplayer... I'd say the first Dawn of War was the best experience. I'm on the fence between Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Dawn of War II is... an acquired taste.

Edit: honorable mention goes to Age of Mythology - it's a macro-focused unit grinder which is more fun than its premise and core would suggest.

Probably CNC Generals but all of them from TS to RA3 are contenders.
Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge will always be my favorite, but most of the C&C games.
