Tipping Culture in USA?

Things like Barbers, Waitresses and such.

What’s your opinion about tipping culture?

I usually don’t go to fancy barbers, it was my first time and I paid $35 for a cut and it was awkward because I didn’t Tip or forgot I was suppose too?

It's common practice in North America.

What I don't like is how a tip percentage in some places is starting to be 15% or higher.

And when you pay with debit, you have the regular charge, a tip, then a surcharge for using a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ debit machine.

Frankly I wouldn't tip for a $35 hair cut unless the person was really exceptional. Besides, you're probably a guy getting a basic-ass haircut anyways that is easy to do.

I actually really hate the lowkey forcing of tips that is in things. I'll go to a place and it'll ask me to tip on the pinpad so the worker gets to watch as I press "No Thank You"

I'm strongly opposed to it... the last time I encountered it I was taking someone out for a meal and wasn't going to ruin their experience... but you can be sure if it was just me and someone wanted me to pay them 30-50% more for simply carrying a dish from the kitchen to my table and trying to up-sell me **** I'd tell them to pay me 30% more... and then be dis-satisfied and not pay them a **** cent.

I used to be a big tipper because I felt bad that a lot of these restaurant owners don't pay their employees enough, but then I realized that by tipping, I was allowing these owners to continue to cheat their employees out of a fair wage. It's not my job to fund their employees. It's these mega corporations that are at fault; they are the ones who have more than enough wealth to pay their employees a fair wage.

If enough people would stand up and refuse to tip in America, perhaps the employees would stand up for themselves to receive better pay.

Yeah it was basic cut, I didn’t get a crazy fade or anything like that.

No, then they just stop using waiters/waitresses and just make it self-serve, so the cooks set your tray of food on the counter, and you have to walk up and get your food and find your own seat.
Just like how gas stations are all became self-serve, with full service being long since extinct.

You cannot defeat business or corporations. They will ALWAYS win. Always.

Then why isnt that the case in EU? Many countries here have a very different tipping culture because for the most part corporations are required by law to pay their employees a minimum wage (resulting in tips merely being a bonus), and i have yet to see any restaurant switching to "self service". Not to mention that self service doesnt work in some industries like f.e. barbers.
Sure, companies will try to cut corners, but there are limits to what they realistically can do / get away with. Same with f.e. states that oppose raising their minimum wage (if they even have one) to a level that can be considered livable. You always get answers like "well, that will increase the price of goods / services by 500%!", but when you look at states that already have such a minimum wage, goods / services cost the same as pretty much everywhere else.

I do not give tips as I have simply paid for my food. The person who has kindly deposited my meal onto the table is already provided with their set and established wage, even with no contribution from myself. If this amount of financial reimbursement is found to be insufficient in order to be able to maintain a livelihood, then it is quite apparent that a wrong career decision has been made, which I feel no need or desire to correct financially.

When it comes to going to the hair stylist, this scenario presents itself differently, as I would frequently visit this establishment in order to alter my hair color and the person who specializes in performing this type of service often wields sharp-edged tools in the proximity of my head. In this case, I allow myself to be somewhat generous with the monetary tips.

Wagies got their $15-an-hour minimum wage they wanted so badly... Now a $3 sandwich costs $8-$9.

I no longer tip unless someone goes above and beyond what is asked of them, and feel damn happy about it.

I'm glad they got their wage raise, and glad I no longer have to pay tips.

dont accept being underpaid and have to live on tips, dont accept any tips, but steal from your boss instead.
