What type of games do people want?
I'm a student of Game Design, and I'm curious as to what genres of gameplay people are interested in nowadays.
- Puzzlers?
- Platformers?
- Collectathons?
- RPGs?
- JRPGs?
- MMORPGs?
- MOBAs?
- Real-Time Strategy?
- Third-Person Shooters?
- First-Person Shooters?
- ImmSims?
If you could ask for one perfect game to be made just for you, what style would it be?
*Edit* Please, I just want quick answers, either the genre, or a game title, maybe even a brief description. Nothing off-topic.

I'd suggest doing some analytics instead of simply just asking random people.

See what sells the most, compare sales to reviews.
Look at twitch, see what type of games are constantly being watched.
Etc etc

If I told you I thoroughly enjoyed the System Shock remake that recently dropped, it doesn't mean much. Since it got decent reviews but meh sales.

But, usually the makings of a great game - come from pure passion instead of trying to make something that caters to people that already have outlets to fill the voids.

what sells the most = casual crap.
one should strife NOT to make wnat sells the most.
for the common people rather eat junk than fine dining
rather wear crap than quality clothes
rather look at kitch than art
etc...

what one should do is make actual quality, and be satisfied with a decent income.
(sure the cello player of the philharmonic aint earning rock star income, but neither is she poor either)
I like first person stealth..

The more popular the genre is, the more competition a game will have. Strategically it might be worth finding a medium ground where there is less competition but enough popularity yet be able to maintain the game in terms of finances and labour.

Game styles and uniqueness are always a powerful attribute for indie games.

if you want a truelly great game... :

**have it be an TBS/RPG combo
**have it be steampunk themed
**have it contain in between mission movie scenes
**hate it contain funny ingame scenes
**have the map be multy layered -> call it discovering new continents.. or planets, or whatever.. just have multiple maps to play in 1 game..
**have a ton of gear, spells, items, to discover, make sure they are unique looking items, and not merely the same looking item with different stats..
**make sure that when clicking units they say funny things

I personally would love to see a game like "Muramasa - the demon blade" but for PC. There's a noticeable absence of side-scrolling games with an expressive art style (most choose pixel art which I like but am getting slowly fatigued with), multiple characters to choose from and a branching story. There's no shortage of games which have similar combat but don't tick the other checkboxes. (art, multiple characters, more endings). Not sure how well it'd sell, but it is an unsaturated game type so... might be worth a shot.

doesn't matter. what matters is how much can you put on the specific genre you like

there are great games in niche genre and they sold quite well. not because they're purely niche but because they're accessibly niche

you can't just make a game so that literally everyone would play. it's impossible. what matters is to make a game, whatever niche or not, that people in and out of the genre to like and play. basically, know your audiences

i'm not an expert so if you didn't find this helpful, just throw it to the trash i'm bad at advising

to answer your question... everything really but fps, rpg and especially platformers are as strong as ever.
I would like a sci-fi, futuristic ARPG (like Diablo). Imagine a dual wield class with lightsabers. Gotta make it happen.
a territory control mmo with no progression features or econ.

I'd be fine if a game had all of the above. As long as it isn't turn based.
What's wrong with turn based?
They should make an “every genre game”. It has every single genre in 1 game.

It will be a Free To Play Open World MMORPG Survival Horror with time traveling knights in space driving fast race cars trying to save the universe from aliens whilst playing soccer but not before solving a puzzle. If you’re lucky you might be able to pull some loot because it’s also a Gacha game.
Fixed angle horror, first person shooters, third person shooters, stealth, and crpgs.

nothing. I like turn based.
I hate shooters and racing games.

but filthy casuals (aka console players) like other games than the classic pc gamer (aka the high IQ nerds)

even when pc gaming was still 98% of the market in the 90s... strategy gaming was merely 15% of all gamers.
-> and turn based gaming was a smaller segment of that group..
**the only plus side being that that group bought a lot more.. so while only 15% of gamers liked strategy, their marketshare was actually larger.

fact is that a lot of people need more instant gratification.
**thats why a lot more people wanted even in those days racing and fighting game, it was even than a lot more common to have a stupid shooter or racing game at a lan, than to get people to play a strategy game
**and IF they would play strategy, they were much more likely to pick the likes of c&c.. and warcraft III with about 30 minutes per game tops.. over the likes of age of empires where games could take 1-2 hours.

**playing a turn based game is like playing a dungeon and dragons session.. it is like spending all weekend on it.. and not just the one... but 2 years long each weekend...
not many people want that...

for the ones who LOVE that kind of comitted stuff however it is great..

I want more linear games like RE4 Remake or The Last of Us.
a genre that somehow has regressed and might be a niche : adult grafic adventures.

today those point and click with a movie games are only used for children games, like dora the explorer..

but in the olden days.. star trek games, 7th guest, and many other more adult variants of grafic adventures excisted...

might be the right time to give that a revival.
I like a mixed bag,

I like Simulators, Racing, FPS, MMO for example.

If there was to be a perfect game for me? hmm some MMO where you get to play as an animal with deep customization of what animal and the animals looks. I'd love to play as a bunny in more games.
A semi-realistic RPG that is more mature than you usually find today. For example, Fallout 1 & 2 had more mature humor than the rest of the series.

If your looking for a market that has more or less went away, but that are still fans out there, look at space dogfighting games like x wing and wing commander. Focus on single player content, and if the project success then worry about multiplayer.
