So does that make Minecraft a Live Service then?
There's certain capes that you can no longer get.

Servers shutting down after a while, and you will be lucky to still be able to play in single player mode.

I view live service games as being anything that big publishers explicitly label as “live service”.

I don’t really agree with this notion that live service is a term that is applied to any sort of online game with on-going support. Like people want to say that MMOs were the “predecessors” or “the origin” of the live service model. To me, I just stick with the term that was used from the start. I don’t see WOW or RuneScape as live service games, they are just MMOs, because that’s what they were from the start.

If it was marketed with the term “live service”, then it’s a live service. If it wasn’t, then it’s not.

when a game has constant updates for half-baked in game events, additions to the in game store and random franchise tie-ins but no QoL, bug fixes or gameplay additions

It means a rip off
It means "You will own nothing"
It means you will not get to mod it for your own fun
It means your wallet gets to die

but ultimately it means, I'm not touching it.

But then how do publishers define it to differ from MMOs?
Your definition relies on a companies definition, so what is that?

MMOs Shouldn't exist without the ability to play or buy an offline version as well.

Instead of striking private servers they could work with them.

Used to mean they ran a server so people could play online in client/server arrangement as opposed to peer-to-peer which was basically top garbage back when internet speed and cpu power sucked.

These days.....yeah, pretty much whatever they want.
minecraft? no, it is a TnT production service. its all about making the biggest TNT production facility completely automated.

Peer to Peer is just another way of saying "Nintendo gets to charge you money for your own internet".

A living service.
Live Service?

Something along the lines of:

"Hey there gamers! Do you really like this game? Do you have fond memories of it? Do you want to play it again 5-10 years from now? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Tough crap, it's gonna be gone forever when the next one comes out and we shut down the servers for this one!!!! Give us your money and consume temporary product until next temporary product comes out! NOSTALGIA BAD! OWN NOTHING, and be happy, OR ELSE!"

Yeah, it's like that. :SafeForWork:
