Get a VPN, yes or no?
What are your thoughts on VPN's? I have been thinking of getting one for my family. However, I am not completely convinced getting one is a good idea. I have read here lately some have been raided by the police and some people are still being discovered even though they are using a VPN. I do not torrent download but it's more of a security thing for me as I do not want someone spying on me. Another issue I have is the bombardment of VPN ads and reviewers being bought out for said VPN company making their recommendations useless. What are your thoughts, broth pro and con? Thanks

Sooooo, its starting to look like getting a VPN is a bad idea unless someone comes along and proves VPN's usefulness better than what has been said so far.

Unless people are overly paranoid... and lots are ( and probably for a good reason because they're doing something they shouldn't )... the only thing a VPN is good for is bypassing things websites have put on them ~for a good reason~ and are trying to do something they shouldn't.

Don't do something one shouldn't... and there's no real need for a VPN for general day to day web use.

I hear you can get shadow banned in Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 for playing with a VPN on. :theDoge:

I was really thinking of using a VPN till I read something like what you said here somewhere else. People getting banned anyway even though they use a VPN and people getting busted downloading torrent files and once again they had a VPN. I do not feal sorry for those that download torrent files but I would get upset if I was banned from one of my games.

Its a scam.

You can't stay anonymous on the public domain. When the telephone exchanges and internet infrastructure was devised, lines were dedicated for law enforcement and military use. It is literally impossible to stay off-grid while you are surfing the web or having a phonecall.

Except this is literally false.

If this were the case, IP holders would have a field day go after every internet pirate and there's nothing that could stop them. Authorities wouldn't have issues stopping the spread of CSAM because they have a backdoor to every connection.
you make yourself sound like you watch that one fat guy called mutahar and how he brags about that linux is good

A VPN won't avoid a ban since that is done to the user account, not the IP.

If you can prove anything you said, I'm all ears.

Never heard of a IP ban before humm?... it's not just user account bans you know.

I have. Bans from a majority of games are done at a user account level. This makes sure the person can't just swap IPs and get back on. Which can be done without a VPN.

there is no point in getting one when you already pay for internet, why pay for another pointless "feature"? its like buying an antivirus when you should use common sense with the already pre-installed windows defender
changing your dns server prolly better
A vpn will hide your traffic from your ISP as all they will see is an active VPN tunnel and not the content. But unless you live behind a great firewall of government approved content you probably do not need one.

I think I want to make my own. Not a service or anything commercial, I just want to see if I can figure out how to LAN with my friends over the Internet (I know things like that already exist, the key point is I want to see if I can figure out how to do it).

As for VPN services... Idk, I'm not convinced they make me more secure. Sure, they encrypt the traffic to the endpoint, but all my internet traffic should already be encrypted since all sites I visit use https rather then http. I guess it might benefit privacy if websites won't log my IP, but on the other hand, if I use a VPN then they can potentially know a lot more then that about me. Not sure which of those situations is best.

VPNs are a great technology for a lot of things, like when I worked at a university during the pandemic I could access the university resources that were behind a firewall from home using a VPN. But it's not some invaluable security tool that is the only thing protecting you from all the scumbags and hackers on the internet and your only way to have some privacy. At least that's not the impression I get.

There is a very good reason that VPNs are less secure than folk believe.

This means that special units of police and FBI can see who views or downloads some of the worst types of online content there exists. Things that are usually only found on the dark-web and stored on servers located in nations that are corrupt. Nations that don't protect the most valuable members of society.

Too bad that the type of criminals who are busted for viewing such content or storing downloads from such servers are protected in extra secure wings of prisons.
Your too paranoid to click youtube links in steam I thought?

VPNs are mostly used for getting access to region locked things and illegal stuff
you can also use it to bot sneakers or something

you can use VPNs if you dont want your ISP to know what your accessing... but if youre not doing anything illegal i can guarantee you that you wont notice a single change
First you need to be somewhat hardcore about security and anonimity, at least compared to an average user, and only then, when you are well informed, is it time to consider.

As for regional checks and bypassing ISP-driven angry messages, sure. Just don't route all traffic through it, especially if it's a shady free VPN.
