It actually just shuts off their visual perceptions, which their brain is tuned for and responds to interruptions by freezing (ie ocean dust clouds which may be full of prey.)

They're still very much alive and aware, just not reacting to the resulting dissection.

No, there are many who have it out for me. I've always found this amusing, I remember laughing when they mention how historically accurate and how it is based on 'actual events', then the stark contrast with the giant crab.

From my knowledge of history, I wasn't aware of any battles against giant enemy crabs, especially ones that can only be harmed by attacking their weak point for massive damage.
