US elections system
Plop.

Why does america has only two (MAIN) parties ?

From my tiny french perspective, it is a tiny bit reductive ; so i'm asking all US peeps around : how do you feel about it ? Not asking for an historical justification about the how and why it came into place - just your take of off-topic dwellers.

As far as i've understood, there are 5 parties in the US, so my question stays almost the same : US peeps, how do you feel about the political power separated in such manichean manner between the two major ones ?

Stay civil, and of course, please say f you're from the US or not - that will help me understand your standing point.

I hate to say it, but your vote means literally nothing. The electoral college takes your vote, crumples it up, throws it in the trash can, and then votes for whoever they want.

As I understand it, in at least 24 states, it's all perfectly legal.
So if you live in those 24 states, you're literally wasting your day voting, because it goes right in the trash can.
(The upside, if you are in those 24 states, you can't be blamed for whoever wins the election, because whether you voted or not, it made zero difference)

Believe it or don't, I don't particularly care.

The US isn't a democracy, it's a republic, and citizens don't vote for presidents, states do. States operate as separate governments and those states created the federal government and chooses it's leaders to represent them as a whole in foreign affairs. For the popular vote of all citizens to be used to elect presidents, it would completely usurp the states rights that were guaranteed to them for joining the union and put all power over them into the hands of a much smaller group of people in the federal government. This is why the US doesn't operate like the democracies you imagine... because it's not, never was, and never will be.

So the electoral college isn't ruining anything. It's working as it was intended to from day 1. Because Democracy is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Pretty much...

Anyone trying to use "Adam Ruins Everything" as "facts" is pretty much bias... those videos have been debunked time and again... it's pure propaganda and zero truths
You should check out the statistics on how many people are actually Democrat and Republican, in terms of active voters.

Then look at the percentage of Independents

But oh yes, it's a lesser of two evils, because two "major" parties that can't even break 20% each.

Face it, your election system is broken

All you have is compulsory voting for one party or the other, out of fear, which is pathetic

People think that their vote is going to waste by voting third-party. Which is actually kind of true. Especially if you live in a swing state where the vote for either democrat or republican, can really count a lot.

And statistically the chance of third-party having any chance, is basically nothing.

tho if one isn't free to express their opinions, that does draw into question "why vote"...

That's exactly defeatist thinking which leads to the exact predicament

Tell me, would a fair election system that actually works, allow for a third party victory?

It would

So yes, US election system is broken.

Everyone votes out of fear due to wedge issues that are meant to distract whilst much more terrible things occur

Like, apparently the beacon of light has like, almost all failing bridges. Failing infrastructure. No clean water to Flint, MI since...2012? Or earlier? Can't remember. US politics isn't my business, but it becomes mine when the Thorns adorning the head of the statue of liberty, start poking other countries...

I am reminded of the "good cop, bad cop" routine

Americans don't realize they're the ones trapped in the police station

Minority groups deserve equity and fair representation in all institutions to ensure they aren't marginalized or discriminated against by the majority.

"No, not like that!"

I mean, they've been doing that since long before minorities (and women) were even allowed to vote in the first place.
So, both the minority and majority's votes have meant nothing.

And Your White Knight, like I said - believe it or refuse, I don't particularly care.

I personally appreciate the Iceland system, the scandinavian ones arent that bad for a lot of things, and south korea is still democracy #1. I've just accustomed too much to the french sh*tshow.
Don't forget Taiwan! There's a reason that is rated as the best democracy in the world.

But yes, I'd agree with you on scandinavia and Iceland.
The best democracy :steamsalty:

Whose goal is to give you no choice than to choose to be part of the army to kill people.

Where war is religion

and you being charged penalty for crimes you haven't yet committed as if we all are prisoners of war.
Money, power, and of course, very friendly laws. I mean, College Electoral system and gerrymandering are pretty much an American thing...

Well, the LDP has dominated national elections ever since its foundation, though it has lost national elections and there are plenty of other parties in the country, and performs not as well in prefectural and especially municipal elections.

As a right wing party, it benefits from a conservative society happy with the status quo, and a very strong party base outside the large cities, so this is likely going to continue for quite some time in the future.

So does many other countries.

You vote on representing people and they screw you over by creating alliances.

When these alliances becomes public knowledge they make it look like it's normal with parties.

Read medieval politics and they would cut off their ears and noses or beat the hell out of them since they were messengers sent to the king telling the king to do something.
