It would take about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to and from campus in a car even with Los Angeles traffic and cost me about $10-$12 a day. Factoring in used car price, gas, maintenance, and parking fees.
When I took the train that stopped directly AT the campus, it took about 4hours, including 2 train switches that were never on time and could often end up taking nearly 6HOURS to get me that same distance, sometimes missing my classes entirely...
For this "convenience" of public transit it cost around or over $20 a day!
Even worse yet, the trains all shut down at about 9PM, so if I was doing night classes I was screwed and would have to take 5 different homeless and drug addict-filled, urine and vomit-smelling city buses through the most janky and crime-ridden areas of Los Angeles to get back home at around 3-4am... In this case, I had only about 3 hours of sleep before I had to get up for the next day's train.
Meanwhile, with a car, it was not only cheaper, but safer, and gave me an extra 10+ hours a day to actually do things.
There is a good reason many people drive. Public transit is often pure unadulterated garbage. Unless you are some Euro-Poor living in a "country" no bigger than New Jersey.
More land, one-tenth the population. It is true that all of your problems exist here, the difference is that up here, it's way easier to see the nutjobs coming from a distance.
Dog-sleds are the preferred mode of transportation up here in the North. Some idiots like to get towed by moose on their skis, but mostly it's dog-sleds. And ice-skating for shorter distances, of course.
This is one of the few good arguments... but since you folks generally don't get good internet services, I just overlooked you.
It's true though, if I lived in the country, I'd be driving a vehicle too.
In a city, it's just selfish and stupid.
No.. I rather spend time in traffic - it takes about the same time but is more convenient in the end.
I could walk - but that would take 10 hours, cycling would take about 5-6 hours.. driving is about 25 - 30 mins and bus is about 1 - 1.5 hours.
Because standing in a line-up at the DMV is so exilarating; Pumping gas is such a pleasure; Paying for repairs and check-ups is a blessing; Insurance payments are irrelevant... blah, blah, blah.
I just call a cab. Or maybe I catch a bus if I want to save some money.
You... well, you do you.
Having owned several cars, I happen to know how utterly stupid and pointless that is.
There is some benefit if you are terrified of raindrops, or if the idea of interacting with other humans makes you wet your pants... but from a pragmatic or economic perspective... cars are dumb.
Also trying to strawman as people who wet their pants in public because they don't want to spend a large portion of their day waiting for and riding public transit is a purely bad faith argument
four wheel drive trucks are literally a must-have for me.
Fascinating. Strawman and loaded language like "a large portion of their day"?
I use public transit... it has never taken up "a large portion" of any day. It can be frustrating to be sure, but compared to the alternatives, it is magnificent.
Of course, I tend to prefer taxis.
I was on a bus that crashed into a car, resulting in multiple fatalities... that didn't take up "a large portion" of my day.
Tell me more about worthless "strawman arguments".
I think the thousands of airplane flights a day, are probably worse.
Untold millions, probably billions of tons of jet fuel, just burned every day in the atmosphere
Luckily those climate summits are attended by people in separate private jets
