The Expression "The best thing since sliced bread."

I believe that this expression is stupid because there have been so many things invented since pre-sliced bread was first widely sold in 1928 that are easily better.

In your opinion, what are some things that have been invented since then that are better than sliced bread?

Nah it's perfect. Bread is basic. Fundamental. Substantial. What more do you want brother? It's the base.

It is an often misused statement, meant to imply an idea or concept that takes something mundane, and improves on it in a new way.

Thus, a loaf of bread being improved by pre-slicing. It isn't meant to be used for a standalone new concept or item.

Well. I'm not expert on the topic, but sliced bread also came out around the time of the depression here in America. If I were living on the street, starving, thirsty, broke, and cold, I suppose sliced bread would be the best thing I felt like I ever had.

That is probably why the expression came to be.
