Is Digimon Still a Thing?
(I apologize for posting this, in the event that this forum is only meant for video game talk)

I'm suddenly getting much more into anime, and something that's really caught my attention was Digimon. Not because of what I've seen on it - on the contrary, I've never seen a single episode.

There are a few things about it that confuse me and I feel like I should ask some people before deciding to watch it. To begin, the premise is really friggin' interesting, totally seems like something I'd enjoy. But I frequently hear that the show's made for a younger audience. I'm 16, so if that were true, am I at the age where actively watching it would be as weird as actively watching Lazy Town? It's an exaggeration, but you get the picture.

That's the reason why I'm asking people before watching it; it would just be too painfully uncomfortable to start watching only to find out it's a show targeting a much younger audience. In a very literal-sensed family of 7 where the youngest is 13, you can't really attempt this sorta thing.

Second question; is Digimon still a thing? I know it was never nearly as popular as Pokemon, but it still got some pretty good recognition. The problem is, fanart, discussions, and pretty much everything else Digimon-related I see on the internet is usually dated between 2004 and early 2013, hardly ever anything more recent. I may not exactly like a lot of fanbases, but I still love to get involved with people that share similar interests. Is Digimon's community still active, or is it just dead in the water like the video game, DDay Normandy's community?

Some people might raise an eyebrow, but if you like it, who cares what others will think?

I would say you can attempt it, but my family has a different prerogative about such things.

It might be, it might not. Not sure, i'm an old pokemon fanboy so take what i've said with a grain of salt.
I still know a lot of older Digimon fans. I honestly preferred it to Pokemon but a country mile. Long, overarching storylines, continuity, an actual plot besides magic monster animal fights. It, unfortunately, got swept away under the barrage that is Pokemon. Which is also what it got classified as, seeing as that was the only show really similar to it and both being aired by Fox.

It was a real Transformers versus Go-bots kind of deal. One had huge marketing, games, comics and toys all but raining from the sky. The other was so much smaller by comparison, although offering an often superior product.

The Digimon sub-reddit still seems active. I am actually looking forward to watching Digimon Adventure tri.

Look. Stop worrying if it is childish. Just watch the show. Make up your own mind.

Thank you for the insight. One question though; when you said you know a lot of older Digimon fans, do you mean they first got into the show at an older age, or did they grow up with it? Because those are very different circumstances. My siblings and I grew up around Pokemon, so it's not strange to see my brother watching it (he's 18 years old).

Oh, believe me, I'd love to be less of a sheep. Unfortunately, I'm at that awkward phase of my teenage life where I just cannot help but try to be a complete conformist to those around me. That doesn't mean I, like, incessantly buy the latest iPhones and waste my life on Instagram, it just means I - seemingly involuntarily - try to avoid what I think my friends/acquaintances might feel they're too old/good for. I realize this isn't a healthy mindset to have, but I just can't seem to help it.
I grew up watching Digimon:Tamer's. Is it childish (at certain points), yes. Rewatching the show, I actually enjoyed the concept of "Digimon is a card game and anime in the show", if that makes sense. Plus voice actors like Steven Blum are in it (Including the rest of the Cowboy Bebop cast).
That obvious edgy pokemon ripoff? Yeah, it still is I guess.
Watch Digimon: Tamers, still my favorite season by far. That one was dark as hell, especially towards the end, not something I'd show a kid. In the first 2 seasons when digimon died they'd go back to the digital realm and be reborn IIRC, which was pretty child friendly. Now in tamers, well I won't spoil it. Watch the first 3 seasons, those were great, season 4 was just too different for me, didn't watch any more past it.

Both actually. I actually have a long a sordid history with the series, but that is neither here nor there. I know people my own age that go into the series and people that grew up on it. And, for the most part, we still very much enjoy the series. It can be goofy at times, and some of the puns are pretty horrible, but it was a young adult show from another culture. It still stands very strong, and is enjoyable for anyone who happens to like a little light anime faire.

Again, thank you so much. You have thoroughly convinced me to give it a shot! :D

Welp, I'm currently on season 1, episode (22? 23?).

Now, let's be perfectly clear here that I grew up with Pokemon pretty much all my life, and it took me 16 1/2 years to give Digimon a shot. My opinion?

IT IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN POKEMON. SO, SO MUCH BETTER. I am really loving this show! Totally lives up to expectations!

digimon is better than pokemon (in some aspects) and digimon games are much better than pokemon, has different genres, from breeding to rpg.remember monster rancher back in psone era? kinda like that but with different feature, display and systems.

its fine, no one can judge you for your preferences in anime things. just dont go overboard till u become an otaku, thats bad.
