I was always fascinated by Irezumi, or the different styles of traditional Japanese tattooing. You have probably seen it in films featuring Yakuza, which seems to be the only thing people know it from.
I don't have a strong opinion on someone with tattoos, cause at the end of the day, it's their choice. A lot of tattoos hold a lot of meaning to some people people, and some are just for show. Either way is cool with me tbh.
Personally, though, I don't really find tattoos to be attractive.
Pretty much this. A subtle one sure. But full sleeves/body tattoo's? No thanks.
The cultural tatoo. These are tattoos that are part of a culture. I find these interesting, and acceptable on a person from that culture who practices that culture.
Membership tattoos. These are tattoos that show mermbership in a organization that one is proud of. Examples: marines, special forces, or even gang tatoos (hey, they are an organization too). These are acceptable if done in moderation, and if the organization is acceptable. Don't be surprised if people treat you different for being all tatted up with gang tattoos (some people just don't get it).
Dedication tattoos. These are tattoos that show dedication to someone. Like a tattoo with your childs name, or spouse, or mother, etc. I find these endearing if they are done in a tasteful way. If it is too obvious then it falls into the Attention grabber category.
Finally, and the most pathetic category of tatoos,
ATTENTION GRABBER TATTOOS. These are tattoos that stupid people get for attention. They don't mean anything (except to the dummy who got the tattoo). They get them to look cool, to stand out, to make a feeble effort to distinguish themselves. I find these kind of tattoos to be utterly pathetic, and hold those that have them in low regard. These are by far the most common tattoos people get these days, and it is a sign of how lame most people are.
I myself do not have any tattoos. Most tattoos are kind of trashy looking, and low class. Very rarely do having a tattoo to be impressive.
Originally, tattoos were only for convicts and slaves. I once worked with a bunch of kids with tats, and when one asked me why I don't have any, I jokingly said, "because I'm not a convict nor a slave." That joke fell very flat.
Generally, don't like tats. If I wanted decorations on my lampshades, I'd prefer my own designs. #EdGeinJokes
Every tattoo I have has personal meaning to me. I thought very long and deeply about each one before committing to it, to make sure that it was something I'd be happy with to the end of my days and I have zero regrets about any of them. On the contrary, every time I see them they remind me of exactly what I designed them to signify, which was the entire point of getting them in the first place.
The idea that tattoos were "originally" for "convicts and slaves" is absolutely absurd. Only someone almost entirely ignorant of human history would make such a claim.
It's just looks like graffiti. Like drawing stupid stuff on your car with a
permanent marker, you know?
But maybe one or two tattos small to medium scale that kinda represents "you" in the highest original way is kinda cool, I guess.
And what about face tattoos? (except Faith's from Mirror's edge. It looks nice.)
That just tells me "look at me, I'm stupid! WOOOOH"
