It's back when they used to ask if you'd like a bag when you had tons of stuff on the belt.

That doesn't happen in the UK anymore since they introduced a law where most places have to sell bags now for 5p+. You have to actually ask for a bag now.

How funny is that?

Depends on what you are buying. If it is food, you can't get a refund anyways and as long as the order is correct, what does it matter?

Some people don't want to bother with another pice of paper in their wallet, so they someone else throw it away for them.

You need the receipt for tax purposes or to claim refund. If you don't have the receipt, it's one less scrap paper, but you miss out. The only thing I say no to a receipt, is purchasing alcohol - I don't think I can get a refund on empty bottles?

Proof of purchase. Depending on if you want to return an item, you'll need to provide a receipt (or another method depending on the store). This is normally required for purchases such as clothing, housewares, electronics, etc.

Teh amount of carrier bag litter floating about the place has reduced since that was introduced.

How can that even be a law? Are grocery stores not allowed to run their own business? :steamfacepalm:

Quite true, haha!

I don't know. We have some silly laws over here tbh.

IMO though the bag law isn't one of them

At my work place, we ask because most people just don't want them. Our interac machine automatically prints out the store copy, but the customer copy only prints when we tell the machine to do so. If we printed them out for everyone, we would go through the interac paper at twice the rate and cut into our profit margins as that would increase our costs.

Good point.

Because people are worried about wasting materials/environmental damage. eg, it's becoming Bring Your Own Reusable Cloth Bag, and if you don't and still insist on bags, you pay a tiny fee for them.

This is happening in the US as well, btw.

You can't refund food

Of course they're allowed to run their own business: a business that complies with the law. Same as ever. You can't run a restaurant with a rat's nest under the fridge, you can't sell rotten food or buy slave children, you can't assault your employees when they make a mistake, and all sorts of other requirements that are a normal part of running a business. Having to be a little less automatic about the way you hand out large amounts of plastic that contributes to an ongoing environmental problem is really not an onerous imposition.

Cashiers just ask that wanting to know if you want your receipt back, literally. Some people might, some just might not want to bother with it. I know I always ask for mine back, it helps in case I want to return something or if I'm trying to figure up how much I spent.
