My dad thinks Meshuggah is satanic... plz help meh
So hopefully you've heard of a band called "Meshuggah". Well, if you haven't, listen to them before trying to respond, and I mean listen to a few of their songs, not just "Bleed". So, I was telling my dad about them, and he decided to check them out, so naturally he saw the music video for "Bleed", since it's their most popular song. Now, you probably know why he thinks they're satanic or whatever by this point, but I tried to get him to listen to some of their other stuff and he just repeated "no" any time I tried to make a point or say anything at all. If anyone knows of a way I can get my dad to open up, please tell me, cause Meshuggah is my absolute favorite band, but my dad actually said they were "like Marilyn Manson, but one step further"... help me plz

Get headphones! And stop trying to get your dad to like your music.

Problem solved.
Ferrets are just stretched rats.
Rats are just midget ferrets.

And what has this generation come to. Screamo, Metal, and Hard Rock... seriously, why listen to it. It will just have you ending up with hearing aids eventually. Extended periods of time to something as loud as that has a very high possiblility for damaged ear drums.

Satan is the good guy though, as a book is not a good source of information esp. when it comes from a bunch of liars who abuse little kids.

I get this is probably a dead thread but I will reply anyway. I take it your Dad is a Christian? I don't say this negatively at all for I am one. I listen to a lot of bands with extremely questionable lyrics and looks to their band.

I have always been one to abhor those who judge on someones looks. That's why I made this my profile picture and I have made more with blood coming from my eyes just due to the fact that some people said I would be a school shooter just cuz of my looks when I was wearing a hoodie in an old photo. That is why I took things one step further, but I digress.

The reason why I bring up the picture though is because I know a lot of bands do the same thing. People are judging them for their image and sound so they feed into it because at heart, they know who they are, while people looking from the outside know very little about them. My Ma has said the same to me about the bands I listen to. Not realizing she is being naive. She is a huge fan of all the old 70's and 80's Metal bands and she used to complain to me about how her mother would call the bands she liked Satanic. See the hypocrisy? She even called a Christian band I listen to Satanic (Fit For A King).

Here is my findings on the band. I have done some research on Meshuggah and I haven't found anything Satanic about them. Tomas Haake, the drummer, said the song was originaly going to be called "Aneurysm."

"That's what it's about," said Haake. "An aneurysm in your head killing you, and how you're transformed from a living being into dying. It's written in a lot of metaphors."

Last time I checked, having an aneurysm isn't satanic but a severe medical issue. As for the depictions in the video, it looks to me that it is supposed to be metaphorical look of a man fighting his own inner demons. Last time I checked, Satanists welcome demons with open arms.

In the end, your father will think what he thinks. You may even bring forth undeniable proof that they are not but he could stay set in his ways. So I suggest you don't let it bring you down. Keep you head up. Cuz you know the truth. Don't let other peoples fear of the unknown influence your decisions.
For a necro that was pretty good. My impression was that that father just didn't want his son listening to that kind of music. We're hearing this story through the view of the OP and thus only know his interpretation of events. I think that it's feasable that the father was less focused on it being literally satanic and more about how he couldn't percieve this band being a good influence on his son.
Tell your dad that music is music. Meshuggah in specific is not satanic, most of their lyrics question humanity and their decisions, almost seeing humans like machines (like in Bleed), one can agree with what the say or not and still independently enjoy their music. Meshuggah is a skillful band in terms of rhythm over melody, with insane drumming and picking efforts. You shouldn't force your dad to listen to them, itd only be a problem if he doesnt let YOU do so. Meshuggah is rather rational on the topics they pose and discuss. Plus, you gotta love extended range guitars.

I'm also lowkey sad that the day I dont look at the forums someone talks about one of my favourite bands.

But yeah, there's that. Its not music for everyone, its expressive and fairly technical / boundary-pushing.
