Well at least video games and chess are competitive competitions based on something we as humans are actually superior in, and something we should show off. Our minds that is... Who the ♥♥♥♥ cares how good you are at physical sports, an animal will always be better than you! In fact humans are the WORST at every physical activity, besides long distance running.

Our brain power is what separates us apart from simple animals, not kicking a ball or running in a line for 100m. At least what competitive gamers do takes actual skill, they are participating in something animals can't do. Not like what physical sports players do, participating in something animals can outdo them in.

Physical "Sports" just demonstrates what we humans are worst at.

So yes, competitive gaming should be considered as a legitimate sport.

Hey now, there is brain power, will and discipline when it comes to regular sports too. It's not just the brute mechanical power of running, swimming or cycling really fast. Not forgetting that only humans can ride a bike, do a breaststroke, fire a gun or throw objects really far and fast.

The amount of brain power involved in chess and gaming isn't that great either - chess could be reduced to memorising as many offensive openings as you can, the other is all in the reflex actions, that degrade by the time you hit the mid twenties.

Even tho Sport means an activity involving physical exertion, I consider gaming a sport. It is not like any random person can play Dota 2 and instantly be a Master, it requires skill.

definition of sport

an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Therefor video games can not be a sport, just like Nascar can not be a sport.

Actually, Nascar is very physical. incase you haven't noticed, they're driving physical objects and they are actual human beings, not sprites? It fits the definition.

Saying Nascar is not a sport is like saying Horse Races are not sports. It is physical, It's all real humans and things. It fits the definition.

IN WHICH CASE,

Video games, like eSports, are not sports- YET. When they take up, as the one I quoted said, "Physical Exertion", Then it can be considered a sport. We are not truly there yet, with our digitalised games.

Without looking at the formal definition of "exertion", I would think that it would vary from person to person. Someone who is morbidly obese, who uses a mobility scooter to get around, would find getting up to get a glass of water to be extreamly exhausting.

I power walk about 8km a day. This is an activity I have done for over 10 years. So walking the .8km to the store is nothing to me, where it might be vary hard for someone else.

I would ask that you please read the entire thread before responding to one of my posts.

Thank you

Playing video games is definitely not a sport. I hate when people try to "sexy" it up. They're video games and they are fun to play and you can be competitive while playing them but it all boils down to people sitting on their ass in a comfy chair. Usually while eating potato chips or cookies.

It barely registers as any physical activity at all besides simply moving your fingers and blinking your eyes. If that is a sport then I guess writing your name should be one too.

I did read the thread. You posted, I replied.

Exertion is a general thing- You use something physical unto where your muscles start working and producing and breaking, and you have exerted. To shoot out. You don't have to be Exhausted. The point is, you moved. Your muscles still exerted the energy.

The thing is, a video game is not technically a sport yet, becuase even though one of those "eSports" will have you exert, it is not truly competitive on a large scale. Now, when we can somehow get some man in Ukraine and another man in the States to competitively play one of these things, then it could be considered massive-scale.

when there are physical, digital tournamants. When one exerts for anothers' entertainment through friendly competition, it is a sport. Video games do not meet all these requirements, one way or another. It can be done for others entertainment, but it could never be chalked in as a commercially wrote sporting. Other things can be done mass-scale, but not under basis of exertion.

Is it possible for Video games to become a sport? Well, duh. Is it right now? No.

No, exertion is not a general thing. If you take the absolute literal meaning to an extreme you could make it sound like everything could qualify. But everyone knows what the spirit of the word means and can spot a weak argument based on the literal interpretation a mile away.

I could just as easily try and claim Football is a game not a sport because it's "cerebral". You use your brain and think all the time. I won't, because thats a stupid argument, but It would be just as valid as your argument.

Oh and since you have obviously been living in a cave FYI gaming does have physical digital tournaments, million dollar prizes, teams from around the world and millions of people tuning in to see a match.

I never said it did not need smarts. You need your brain for everything. As such, it is also a generality. It can not be applied to the argument becuase, as human beings, it is impossible to not use ones' brain.

We are talking of physicality. Moving your fingers and talking is -weak-. I never said literal meaning either. I had only spoke the literal meaning. The spirt must be applied, but you would not know anything about that. Either way, sitting at your desk and playing the next great sports simulator is not a true sport. Just you pressing buttons. Your body is hardly working. Exerting so little it may as well not even be considered.

Show me an example. Something I would find broadcasted on the television. Then I may consider it a sport. Tell me how physical it all is. How much action and movement is involved.

Is cheerleading a sport?

Probably should be, it's far more dangerous than American Football or almost any other American sports played in High Schools.

Two teams, physical, competition, and public. I guess, if the cheerleaders are competing with other cheerers and not as moral support for a different sport, then sure.
