Old school anime is best anime, in my opinion. I need to watch El Hazard; and I need to re-watch Ranma 1/2 again too.

Lesser known anime: Blood Lad, with Accel World a close second.

Neither RWBY or Avatar are anime series, dude. Avatar was animated in Korea so it's not an anime, and RWBY was made by RoosterTeeth, so that's not an anime either.

If you had asked me this a month ago I would have had difficulty answering. I've seen plenty of animes that had good parts, I genuinely enjoyed some, but I could never really get into the genre. They tended to involve varying amounts of weird Japanese stuff that I just couldn't wrap my head around, which prevented me from really getting into any show, even if they had fun stuff like giant robots.

Then a most insistent friend told me that I needed to watch Girls und Panzer. He swore up and down that I would love it.

His enthusiasm was met with skepticism on my part. I DO like tanks, but any Anime that specifically emphasizes girls, and a great many that do not, tend to include weird Japanese fan-service stuff that I am not fond of. Nothing against the weebs, everyone has had a fantasy girlfriend, but anime chicks who are usually underage are just not my thing. Worse, this was the same guy who told me that I really needed to try HyperDimension Neptunia and now I feel dirty for even owning that game.

Ultimately, he convinced me it was nothing like that, so I ecided to go ahead and watch the show. At first, I was not impressed at all. It had a promising bit with tanks, but then it turned into some boring **** about high-school kids and their crap, the only thing in anime, especially recently, that seems to be more prevalent than fan-service. I was moments away from turning it off and never watching it again.

But at this high school, girls have an elective called Sensha-Do, which in English translates roughly to "Tankery." Intriguing. Apparently it is treated like the current Japanese custom of the Tea Ceremony, which young women are encouraged to learn due to the belief that it will instill values desireable for marriage and a relationship.

Now, I don't know about tea, I hardly ever drink the stuff, but if there were a program where girls learned tank combat I would kill other men to be first in the line of suitors. Whatever she wants; diamonds, a pony, a sailboat, possibly a sail-pony made of diamonds, (I'm fairly certain I could put that together and positive that I would try) I would be there with her heart's desire just for a chance with her.

Anyway, it's the best idea in the history of mankind. Once they have learned the fundamentals of tankery, they participate in mock battles with WW2 AFV's as a form of interscholastic competition. Pretty awesome, right?

Then you find out that the schools are super-massive aircraft carriers with small cities built on the flight decks. What in the actual ****!? I thought I had a good time in high school and now I feel cheated.

No, I don't care that the entire concept is hopelessly impractical. As a species, we should strive to make it a reality. The costs would be worth it in tankery matches, as you're about to see from the series' excellent and enjoyable if mostly unrealistic tank battles. You'll have to forgive me and the author of this Youtube Video. Apparently copyright claims prevent unmodified videos and he's Hungarian. Some of his jokes are still funny, even the relatively dumb one with the pizzas when they launch an Italian Tankette at the enemy, get it? Meh, Hungary:

I have been to five continents, seen actual tanks in battle, with all their terrible majesty, and not once have I seen anything approaching that level of glorious.

The only criticisms I have of this, my new favorite anime by the length of a supercarrier, is that it needs more tank fights and it is TOO. DAMN. SHORT!!!! One season and a movie are not nearly enough for such a briliant show. It needs at least ten seasons and a game that would be better than World of Tanks. There is no excuse when dumba$$ Kirito and SAO got two seasons, a sequel, and a bunch of games that sucked from a less-awesome setting.
