Vehicle controls on pc, you are doing it wrong devs.
W as accel is not acceptable as it has no pressure/analog sensitivity. it's like having a full on-off switch for "car go fast" versus a pedal/analog trigger you press for more throttle. this is easy enough to fix with any modern mouse and keyboard setting.

w starts accelaration a set default middle of the road value.
scroll wheel up increases accel.
scroll wheel down descreases accel.
releasing w stops accel.

I admit, a lot of GOOD ports/pc centric games handle this differently, using a sort of slow ramp then keeping max speed, but a lot of games just do w=full pedal to the metal also. slow ramp is better than simply w=gas, but it's not perfect.

I have controllers, I do plug them in for car controls on quite a few games, but a lot of games do pedestrian on foot to vehicle switching and have gameplay segments/driving bits that go much better with variable gas/throttle. optimizing a game for the common controllers (mouse and keyboard) of the platform it's on shouldn't be too much to ask.

Sounds good. I just realized I have not ever played a racing game on PC
Sounds good to me too, I do like the idea of using the mouse wheel increases accel and descreases accel.

yeah racing isnt horrible if it's arcade racing. ie need for speed / burnout, but a lot of pc games with vehicles and missions regarding them have things like stalking another driver without getting too close, etc. with w=gas it's worlds harder and feels wrong. tapping it and such. a lot of racing games that aren't arcade do worlds better with a controller or wheel+pedals setup

I would, but I primarily do racing games on console.

And anyways, you gradually get faster as you hold W like in normal vehicles, which is good enough for me.

tell that to gta iv/v, borderlands 1/2, watchdogs, far cry 3/4, and plenty of others. watch dogs is the worst offender by far due to it being combined with horrid driving in general, but I can't think of a single open world modern day game that hasn't messed this up. even mgs v did it wrong. half life 2's car acceleration is well done for pc controls, but it can be finicky when you get stuck somewhere

also a lot of these games have segments where you have to tail someone without flooring it or getting too close and alerting someone. those segments become annoying just like driving in general with mouse+keyboard in gta/mgsv/farcry4/etc

Well I've never played any of those games so I don't know.

I haven't played much of anything on PC. Only World of Tanks, Portal, and Portal 2 really. Ironically, I was considering getting a racing game to see if I like them on here. I think that I will now!

I play Trackmania Turbo on PC and I use Shift to accelerate and Ctrl to brake/reverse. Are they good controls?

Oh this is why the only racing game I ever enjoyed was the 2005 NFS MW black edition.

yup. for an arcade racer where turns don't need anything more than a tap of the brake to achieve, it's fine. for other games that have stealth vehicle missions, it's a nightmare.

manual transmission and speedbreaker on top of tight car controls really helped that one shine. good times.

I just keep the controller in the middle and switch when getting in/on a vehicle. I definitely wouldn't want your proposed control scheme to control a vehicle.

not a problem to me, i just don't like the lack of choice most games present. either plug in a controller (and deal with incorrect button prompts when not using it, etc) or use w=full on pedal down on the gas. I think more control/binding would be better when transitioning an analog style pressure control to pc mouse and keyboard. have analog style 2-3 button alternative.

I don't think that's needed, having played some racing games I think W key is fine as it is.
DefraggedSSD Sep 6, 2016 @ 6:54am
Pretty sure the scroll wheel is analog too, so you would have no clue how much you are accelerating or when your at max input.
