Why do Europeans call that sport "football"?
It's called soccer. Not football. Europeans are so weird.

Football is the right word, you always have the ball at your FOOT, except for the goalkeeper, who is allowed to hold the ball with his/her hands

Why do Americans call American Football football? in american football, you just use your foot to kick off

It's weird that Americans call it football just because it has REAL football influences ?

American football has more rugby influences

Football comes from Rugby that is why. (still ilogically ofc)

You see modern football, is derived from Rugby, but the elite, did not want to touch the dirty ball, like a bunch of pigs (yuck) so they made a new version of Rugby, where you used the feet mostly.

Then the peasants, could keep playing Rugby... how dirty...

Gridiron have its origin and influence from Rugby

Everything in America is a rip off of something else. Their "football" is rugby, their basketball is netball, their baseball is rounders.

You can't expect them to be original and come up with their own words, that would take some imagination.

soccer and football are the same

I try to view subjects and arguments from all sides of the coin and I can only conclude that 'Football' and not 'soccer' is the real term for this sport, because you use your feet to kick the ball about hence the term Football.

As for american football, american footballers play with their hands.
Because you kick the ball with your foot.
Kinda easy to understand.

This is so true.

They are so in awe of Europe, and devoid of any original ideas they copy the names of our cities and towns....... Birmingham, Hertford, Boston, New York, New Orleans, to name but a few....... I'll give them credit for the last two, as they stuck New in front of it (that shows creative thinking). I think us English are their favourites though, as they've named a region in our honour (New England).

Yes siree, I sure love my American cousins...... Well some of them, there is however a certain group of them who are just worthy of ridicule due to their cringe worthy level of ignorance in regards to the world around them..... I believe most (not all) are known as Republicans, and boy do they see red easy!

Before I go, I should at least mention something about football. Those "angry" Americans I talk about remind me of Millwall fans, the most despised team in England....... One of their chants "No one likes us, we don't care!"

Oddly the word soccer actually comes from English football and rugby, the latter is a game that is more similar to American Football than American Football is to European Football. Fun with languages.

As I said I don't know if it was the origin - that wasn't what I was saying.

And I love Germany. Much of American cuisine is based on imported German stuff.

Nah, most people don't care. I certainly don't Never been a one for national stuff. I might support the footie team if it's all going well but I don't care about the patch of land I'm on. :)

Why are Americans calling it football when 90% of the time they are carrying the ball in their hands.

I was born watching football, in a country where everyone plays it, does not mean that everyone is forced to like it lol.

This is true, which is why I said in my previous post "may be football just isn't for you (nothing wrong with that)"

I know lots of people who don't watch it

Regarding the scores, it is a well known fact that average scores have been very low in the past decades. More often than not, teams are happy to play defensive once they get a goal, for example, and many teams rely on "possession strategy". I know these are valid strategies, does not mean they are spectator-friendly.

Obviously fans want their teams to win, but it's not solely about the score. It's known as "the beautiful game" for a reason.

And while it is the number 1 worldwide, that audience is not even across the globe, nor does that mean that all other sports are way way far behind. There is stiff localized competition from other sports in other countries. South Asia, a huge market with ~1.6 billion people, cricket dominates, and few know anything about football, for example.

Same to video games, CS:GO is the most played game in Steam, does not mean everyone here will think the game is great.

Although I get your point, you are trying to twist things to fit your agenda...... My point is still valid, factual, and true "it the most popular sport in the world", and I know for a fact people in South Asia watch football. It may not on the same scale as Europe, South America, & Africa, but people in that region still watch it....... Not that what I just said is really that important, as South Asia is only part of the world

Regarding the EPL, or anything sports related for that matter, upsets do occur. And to be honest, Manchester United is kinda in a free fall now lol. Gone are the glory days of Alex Ferguson. The current owners seem to be more interested in profit and return on investment rather than glory - which is good for their business, but not exactly good for their fans.

Also helps that every other out-of-country magnate seems to think it is a good idea to buy an EPL team, Newcastle being the latest addition.

I totally agree with you in regards to Manchester Utd, so I shall lol with you on that one.

If the EPL wasn't the best then the "out-of-country magnates" wouldn't want to invest. Obviously the more they invest the stronger the league becomes....... The foreign owners of my team are great, and they'll always be held in high regards for turning the fortunes of my team around........ That said, the "greedy" foreign owners we had before them will always abhorred, as we almost went into administration on their watch.

Beautiful game... Like I said, watching teams playing possession game 90% of the time or diving for fouls? It used to be more offensive before, but now...

There is no agenda. I never said football was not the most popular sport in the world. I said there are other sports that have a very sizeable audience as well, often surpassing that of soccer in some countries. Also, popularity does not necessarily mean it is better than others, and also plenty of historical factors that helped it become the most popular sport in the world, come into play.

Regarding the EPL, they are undoubtely the best one right now. But in the 2000s, the Spanish probably were on par with them. Much of the allure of the EPL is marketability, which other football leagues do not have.

It is about a ball that can only be passed with the foot
I don't really understand what's so hard to wrap your head around
