CLANNAD had a super long build up to get you invested in the characters for when it takes a turn for the sad later, in Grave of the Firelies you just get hit by it almost at the start and it doesn't stop until the end.

First season is some generic harem school crap with few "please try to be sad" moments.

After Story, aka season 2 is where feels trip begins.

You'll need to get used to it's rather slow pace, but i'd say it's worth it because season 2 was legitamately sad.

If you really want an anime to cry with, watch Grave of the Fireflies.

^This... True anime art even though a sad plot.

Dunno, personally I need rather "extreme" sacrifices or circumstances of death to cry. Not sure how to describe it properly.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This. I bought the whole Ghibli set from Amazon. I can't watch this one again. Way too sad.

Regardless, CLANNAD is still very good even if the anime has some flaws, I'd suggest picking up the visual novel here on Steam instead, in all cases except for if you don't want to put in 60-90 hours and would rather just go for the anime which would take like 21 hours to go through.

The flaws of the anime would be a few more minor characters being either downgraded to being just support characters or cut outright even if they had interesting story arcs in the VN. Meanwhile one of the shortest side routes being the baseball route being stretched out to make it a more standard school drama anime.
That and how the branching routes get all merged into one single story that has multiple events from the various routes happening, which while does give you a curated highlight reel of the best bits, all of said best bits lose a good portion of the build up.
Oh and I'm very annoyed at how they made one of the first characters you get emotionally invested in the first 8 or episodes later only appear to basically just interject a few lines out of context in a failed attempt to make a sort of running gag and then have the show go on as if nothing happened. Which is a weird choice, to port over an easter egg that normally happens in one of the routes only if you get a very specific achievement in another route, it puts a dent in what otherwise is a highlight reel.

The anime is still pretty good though despite what I'd say to be the flaws, but you'd have to not come to expect the saddest thing ever to be made though.
