By definition music is just music. Ordered sound of any kind. Anyone saying otherwise is making the classic "no true scotsman" fallacy.

I personally don't listen to video game music because I cannot stand background music types of thing. Same reason I'd never listen to a score or soundtrack.

To me, it serves as a background wash to evoke emotion. It doesn't work for me separately.

But that does NOT mean it's not music.

IIRC the older GTA games could have a user music channel... I envisioned a Penny Arcade comic with one of the gangsters from the game asking who the jarate was listening to "Making love out of nothing at all" by Air Supply...

In that sense, I dig that to some degree.

I also like bunging various bits of music in Beat Hazard or Audiosurf.
Sometimes to the extent of bunging a long megamix or some bloody great big rock anthem just to see how long I can survive.

Yeah that's the thing. It's gatekeeping or the no true scotsman fallacy.

Music is ordered sounds pure and simply. Anything that fits under that is music.


It's a bit like the same people who say "that's not a REAL job". If you received recompense for doing something, it IS a real job.

If music is a human science, then you must be able to write the music on paper, and another human must be able to read the music from that paper, and be able to make the music by reading the music from that paper, without having heard the music.

Or at least, that's what I like to tell myself. Because otherwise every sound can be music.
