Usually if I can manage to unpack mine and try to understand what it meant, come up with an "explanation" it affects me less.
Trauma is usually the result of pain and nightmares usually don't cause pain to the dreamer. Though they can present horror imagery, cause fear, even terror, and psychologically mess you up.
However if you are experiencing pain for another reason, like an injury, your mind can incorporate that into a nightmare. The other day I saw a story on youtube about a camper who was attacked by a fox when she was sleeping outside while camping. It started gnawing on her head and she had a nightmare about someone forcing a crown of thorns down onto her head. It was really traumatic for her when she woke up and she won't go into forests now.
I rather doubt it... how could someone be traumatized by their own dreams?
My Mom scolded me and went back to swap them with another and told me not to flip the cupcakes upside down or she would be angry with me. We then walked out of the store and I accidentally flipped the cupcakes again so we walked in to switch for a second time.
My Mom then told me if I flipped the cupcakes one more time that I would be having no cupcakes at all. I promised her that I wouldn't and we walked out of the store. However, she soon looked at me with a face of anger and disappointment. In my hands were the cupcakes flipped upside down but I didn't even move them so I got no cupcakes and was miserable.
Now whenever I go into a store and see cupcakes that dream plays through my head and I become traumatized.
I had one like that where I got mad at all the scrub tactics they were using and went “man, fight me irl.” And my chair grew living straps and strapped me down while my monitor grew a body and pulled a sword out of its face and started stabbing me with it.
I was of course stoic about it, demanding the game git gud and kill me or gtfo already.
So it decapitated me and left, then came back and started arguing with my head while I rolled my eyes and stuff.
