what, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?

Ok, so considering this as basis, I agree with you. My only disagreement then is to call it a joke in the first place. I guess we'd have to work out a definition of "joke" in this case.
Well, take the military-base example that I provided.

It's not humorless, imo, because what are things the military might order & use?
(Which is probably how he even came up with it.)
...but telling it as anything other than a hypothetical is obviously a bad idea and the majority of people would be alarmed to be told that their package was a bomb.

It ruined the young-man's life because the government workers in the army can't take risks with a package delivered to their base. It would be alarming for most people to be told such a thing but maybe if they knew the guy they'd be reasonably certain that he was joking. ...and the military personnel might have actually known him and actually been on friendly social terms with him ...unfortunately they have protocol to follow.

When someone hits someone over the head with a pillowcase full of apples, that's not a prank, that's just assault, however, there are some things that can be considered jokes & it's possible to see where the person was coming from, who supposedly thought they were making a joke (they probably believe it although it could be an excuse to try and cover bad behavior), yet still be a very serious matter that others will not see as a joke & will react accordingly to it being a threat.

The big problem is that people tend to be bad at considering all the angles & understanding how something that they thought of as a joke might actually be really threatening to someone.

If you have a really really really good relationship with someone, you can probably joke about harming them without them feeling threatened, and they might actually laugh and enjoy the joke, but even that can go bad, so therefore as a general rule of thumb, if it sounds like something that might be a [credible] threat, it just shouldn't be joked about because technically it's both a joke and a threat. :seewhatyoudid:

I could use a good joke about a massacre right now. Yeah, that’s what would lift my spirits.
Those who don't hesitate doing jokes about sorrows like Holodomor, 9/11, Holocaust, Hiroshima&Nagazaki should have their citizenships terminated and should be ousted from their Country, with a joke card from President, reading "President laughed at your input for the community so hard that he wanted to return the favour to you, with Love. BYE!"
sorry i will stop 9/11 jokes as they are just plane wrong and stop doing shooting range i i mean school shooting jokes too and lastly i will stop doing ww2 jokes as my grandpa was in ww2 and killed hitler

Someone's death, severe injury, unfortune. They may feel very angry that you joked about them while they are in vain.

Genocides. Those are very serious things done to people, and it would be very rude to joke about something that was very painful for them, rude to that ethnicy.

Religion, it is highly dishonorable behaviour to joke about something so sacred.

so you would joke about wars, massacres, 9/11? :|

I remember someone posted a thread once, asking if Steam should have a sale to commemorate 9/11. I replied and jokingly suggested that Microsoft Flight Simulator should be part of that sale... I could almost feel the disapproving gazes across the internet.

What a tasteless joke to be made around 9/11

Well... feel free to do a "bank robbery prank" as a joke then and let me know how it turns out for you.

I agree

A better one would of been to ask for Ace Combat instead, no one plays Microsoft Flight Simulator!
