What do you think of Genesis / Phil Collins?
I'm attending a live tribute to them on Saturday called Trick Of The Tail. Fingers crossed.

You got sold short. The Bible I was given was from the 60's and it had pictures all the way through.
Most don't. The one you got must be heavy enough to be a paper weight, mine's too light for it.

It works quite well as a paperweight actually.
They got some great songs and hits that are always instantly recognizable.

A lot of their other songs are a bit too slow for me, with "In the Air Tonight" being the equivalent of musical "blue balls" waiting for the drums to hit in the last minute of the song... But great song to drive in a rainy night with... Or to have sex to.

I love prog rock so I am pretty damn fond of genesis and Phil Collins. Not my favourites by any means but I certainly am a fan

"The only serious misstep they've ever made was replacing Phil Collins with Ray Wilson in the late 1990s."

LOL I remember that. They had a single called congo which had limited radio airplay.

As for the tribute Trick Of The Tail? They were okay. I thought their song selection was pretty poor. They played "No Son of Mine," "Mama" "Land Of Confusion" and "Old Man By The Sea" but no "Tonight, Tonight" or "I Can't Dance". :(

I don't know if Genesis always plays those when they toured?

The last photo I saw of Mr. Collins was of a very frail and old man sitting in a chair because he could not stand. That was his last concert, I believe.

Also not my faves as I prefer more modern stuff but I'll listen to vintage Genesis like Carpet Crawlers and In the Cage and remember them that way.

Crazy that he’s older than my dad.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

Rumor is there are Genesis fans that just can't get a reservation at their favorite restaurant.

^hm, hope the concert went well

if you didn’t know michael stipe you’d have thought collins was the lead singer of r.e.m.
*and only had a slight idea that musical compositions sticks to the artist..
*and that no songs by phil collins can be yodeled with an electric track in the background
