Is it still worth buying a ps2 in 2018?
I was thinking about getting a ps2, they cost around $20 NZD where I live, and at my local cash converters (a pawn shop we have here in NZ), there are plenty of PS2 games being sold there.

is it still worth buying a ps2 today?

yeah, a lot of the classic early 2000s games are known to be better than modern games today, i've got a couple in my steam library, and they are much better than modern games i have.

Get the Fat if you can, because there's some benefits to them, that you can't get on Slim. But i'm not allow to explain, or talk about some of those certain benefits.

Found a list of pros and cons for you so you can make a better choice:

Fat PS2

Pros
  • Compatible with the Playstation Hard Drive (which is required for a very few select games such as Final Fantasy XI)
  • Top of the console is flat, which allows you to stack something on top of it.
  • Controller ports and memory card slots are spaced apart and are designed to allow easier plugging & unplugging.
  • Plays all Playstation 2 games.

Cons
  • Disc tray doesn't secure discs in place, meaning discs are more prone to falling out of the tray, especially when the console is stood vertically.
  • Disc tray is a slide-out style, meaning it's motor is susceptible to becoming worn out over time.
  • Reportedly has Disc-Read Errors more often than the Slim.

Slim PS2

Pros
  • Lightweight, compact.
  • Disc is secured in place within the drive, meaning discs are less prone to falling out of the tray.
  • Has a spring-loaded flip-top disc tray, meaning it won't become burnt out over time.
  • Less issues with Disc-Read Errors.

Cons
  • Without a HDD expansion slot, it is incompatible with the Playstation Hard Drive.
  • Memory card and controller ports are closer together, making plugging & unplugging a bit more of a hassle.
  • Has a spring-loaded flip-top disc tray, which makes it so that you're not really able to stack something on top of it, and you need to ensure that wherever you pit it, you have 4-6 inches of clearance above the console.
  • A small handful of PS2 games won't run on it.

I'm about ... 92.7% sure that the slim ps2 has a fraction less performance than the fat one, as it has been nigh impossible to play midnight club with its framerate and it's hard to see
the distance in general.
I don't remember it being like that on my fat ps2 uuuuuuuuh about 10 years ago.

or a backwards compatible ps3
Don't waste your time with fat PS3, they have a design flaw to fail over time, that means you need to open the whole thing once in awhile, and clear the dust, or else dust will build up over time, causing system to build up heat, and if it becomes hot enough, the chip wil shift out of place, which is going to be fun fixing yourself, or paying someone to do it for you, if you don't have a heat gun, and tools to open the console, and etc...
That was only on the launch PS3s. The fat models that came after that are alot more reliable.

It's an awesome console. Of course you should get one.

Absolutely, especially if you can track down copies of the games you want. Or, alternatively, you can do something else that I'd get in trouble for mentioning, if your PC is powerful enough.

i would rather actually make sure it wont have disk read errors and break so easily, so i might get the ps2 slim.

Never in my life did I ever have any disk read error on my fat ps2, and I had over 50 games.

yeah, but people have said there have been problems with the fat ps2 due to the lasers breaking in the disk drive.

It really depends on what model of the fat PS2 you have. Mine is still working to this day, but I've had one before that died.

Dude, I was pretty damn violent with my ps2, flipping it around and donking my feet at it
whenever I died in Jak and Daxter.
