Modern era in most classical settings is defined as anything after the 1950s.

Well, in the context of this joke, it could literally be anything.

Traditionally in most conversations and situations, it's as David says - the post -war 1950s onwards.

Although it really does depend on the frame of reference. If you're talking about English language you could use any time from the 1800s onwards as the modern age.

In technical terms you would probably say post industrial revolution too.
