Why do people do it? And why do other people who know it's a necropost, continue to do it?

Because in some forums it's acceptable. Depends on the individual forum's guidelines.

Because some people would rather there be less than 1000 of the same post all the time.

I'd rather someone necro a relevant post from 15 years ago than create the exact same post every other day.

necroposting is good for maintaining long conversations and it should be encouraged rather than making new threads.

There's some forums that have threads that have been going for a decade because it just makes sense to keep all information about a topic in one thread.

while I do understand the reason for necroposting within these reasons, but just in-case other users don't understand, pinned posts in discussions automatically don't count because they're important enough to be able to get replied to.

that aside, throughout the many threads I've came across from all different kinds of places, fandom wiki, gamepedia, 3rd-party forums/wiki's, and reddit, necroposting is usually borderline spam.

just because it's open doesn't mean you should reply. Especially if you're not replying anything positive or helpful, which is why necroposting is usually not tolerated, because the term "necropost" stands for replying to a dead-thread with comment/information that isn't helpful or relevant to the last reply or the description of the said thread

if moderator don't want people posting on ancient thread, close the thread. if you see user spamming, report it.

Maybe they're happy to do it because it's... not a problem at all. Just a silly bit of nerd forum culture that should have been left behind long ago. Even the name is absurd.

The inevitable "who necroed this??" comments are vastly more spammy than someone responding to a thread later than anyone's arbitrary ideas about what's 'too old'.

Necromancy is a form of fortune telling wherein one communes with the dead in order to discern information. Necroposting is a form of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wherein one out of ignorance or lack thereof communes with dead threads in order to discern whether or not they'll get yeeted for it.

Isn't it technically better sometimes to continue an old topic instead of beginning a new one without doing a search first?

The answer is, we don't ultimately know, but ᚨᛞᚡᛖᚱᛋᚨᚱᛃ gave a pretty good answer for what possible motive why some people might choose to do it.
