The other part is that I don’t like the games at all.
I didn't have a clue they making a film. Just looked it up briefly and it seems to be a animated movie. Lets hope it's not the disaster that the 1990's movie was.
I would agree... but they are a few exceptions, Sonic the movie was pretty good in my own opinion.
As a game I tend to prefer Sonic games in 2D and Mario games in 3D.
I love Sonic Unleashed (at least the Wii version) and I really like a lot Sonic generations too and I think that Sonic lost world had a lot of potential (unfortunately wasted for the most part) but no matter how much I can like some of his 3D games, both Sonic 2D games and Mario 3D games are objectively much better.
Sonic 1, Sonic 3 & K, Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy 1 are incredible masterpieces.
2D Mario games are good games but they are a bit too "basic" in my opinion. yes on paper Mario can do more things than Sonic with so many different power ups and Super Mario Bros 3 was undoubtedly a great game, but everything in 2D Mario games happen in a very basic, predictable way, the quality is often very good (escept Super Mario World, I don't care what other people say, I hate Super Matio World, it is unplayable, frustrating and boring in my opinion) but nothing feels special enough in those games if you compare them with 2D Sonic and 3D Mario.
On the other hand Yoshi's Island felt extremely special, but the gameplay was a bit too clunky and frustrating in my opinion to be enjoyable, it felt like the Dark Souls of platformer games sometimes, and being so frustrated was not fun. It was an amazing achievement in many ways but they should have made the game itself less frustrating and more enjoyable.
Also as far as I know in Japan it is not even considered a true Mario game anyway...
So I would say that Mario has done some truly incredible and awesome things in 3D, and I really like it a lot but my vote goes to Sonic, I will always prefer him and many of his 2D games back then were (and still are, expecially the first none in my opinion) absolutely legendary as well.
But there's a difference between edgy and good. Mario games were way better IMO. The Sonic games did get better as they went, though. The first one was kinda bad tbh.
Sure, most of the 2D Sonics are way better than most of the 3D Sonics. Sonic Boom. Sonic Secret Rings. Sonic 06.
But Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were better than anything 2D, and Generations (which is definitely the best) does both.
Sonic's games were better designed, imo. Their music was much, MUCH more atmospheric and enthralling, and the gameplay - designed around the character's speed and momentum rather than just hopping from platform to platform - had more flow to it.
I do agree that Sonic has not transitioned into 3D very well though. Sonic 3D Flicky's Island/Blast was good, but after that they rather went downhill.
For me the so called "dark age" of Sonic was a peak of the series and its a hill I'd very proudly die on. Sonic 06 was a technical unfinished mess but damn it it had a heart and soul. Character progression is what matters to me the most, I wanted to see my favorite characters develop further and further and not become one dimensional stereotypes which they sadly are now.
but really, Sonic's portion of the story is sadly the most known and worst one, Silver and Shadow's campaigns were genuinely good.
