In case it wasn't perfectly clear from my topic header, the content of this post is my opinion, ranting and venting. It is not to be construed as insulting, insinuating, or directed at anybody or any group in particular or specific.

In my opinion, when regarding video games there is a line that must never be crossed when it comes to violence in video games. Specifically, a line that can get blurred and invoke real-world penalties.

I'm referring to realism. Guns in player versus player video games are too real IMHO, and in some cases are outright real weapons. It gets too close to real war, and in a kid's mind? It's real.

Therefore, in my views, any weapon that can be used in a video game mode to virtually kill another player should be anime-fied or cartoon-ified.

Like the early 1980s GI JOE cartoon, your gun becomes a laser rifle and fires laser pulses, not bullets. You wanna play GI JOE? Then fine, but don't use real ammo, and make damn sure that people know that that gun is not real.

Additionally, I want to make it clear that this THEORETICAL solution, IF implemented, should function akin to the blood/guts/gore filter in most video games of the Shooter genre.

That way you can still have your violent video game, and parents can be satisfied knowing that their kid isn't growing up to be a mass murderer like some scare-tactic mass-media people like to claim.

I'm not saying that realistic, violent video games should be banned. I'm saying that anything that looks like and functions like a real gun, should be restricted to fights against historical NPC enemies or fantasy enemies.

This would mean that games like Grand Theft Auto, EvE, War Thunder, etcetera; all games that are all PvP, all the time, would not be allowed to use real guns. Instead they'd have to have some kind of brightly-colored, NERF-ish part that says "THIS IS NOT A REAL GUN" to players. Fake guns, fake bullets.

Any game mode strictly against NPCs or bots (PvE) would be allowed to retain their realistic weapons because you're not shooting other players. But anything that is PvP gets modified to shoot lasers or something that's purely not real. And the guns get modified to have some kind of NERF-like coloring. Brightly colored orange components that scream "THIS IS FAKE!"


This also goes for tank guns and warship cannons in games like War Thunder, World of Warships, World of Warplanes and etcetera.

Violent video games can be quite fun, I'm a fan of a few of them myself. But some games against other players are TOO real, TOO close to actual war, for some parents' liking.

With this change, nobody will believe that the violence they're committing virtually, is actually real. Save the real bullets for PvE enemies, and set your weapons on heavy stun for PvP.

EDIT: Since some of you are misunderstanding me, let me reitierate: I want to make it clear that this THEORETICAL solution, IF implemented, should function akin to the blood/guts/gore filter in most video games of the Shooter genre. Additionally, I'm not talking about a MANDATORY change, just an optional filter that you can toggle on and off as you prefer.

The video was exactly about "fake news" and false reporting by "tabloid" journalism... It supports the notion that some are making up dangers. It appears to lampoon those, to a certain extent, so it's a bit questionable. But, it does raise salient points as far as I could see. (Didn't watch it all, didn't need to.)

However, just as a counter to that, everyone here, being "gamers," likely knows that some people have truly died due to their gaming addictions, right? I don't need to go out and grab links to verified instances of, for instance, some poor obsessed South Korean kid that lived in a net cafe and ended up playing Starcraft for two days straight until they literally died, right? We can acknowledge that bad interactions and troubled people can end up causing catastrophic things, right?

The point: People who may already have unhealthy issues or improper attachments or fixations can end up being negatively effected by those very unhealthy things. This exists. Yet, it's often sensationalized to the point of "Starcraft kills, yet again." Because... that generates interest. People don't like thinking that parents or a net cafe or the public at large let that kid engage so obsessively that they died due to their addiction, right? "Nope - It's the game's fault, not ours."

Even so, people with preexisting problems can run afoul of and have bad experiences with even the most mundane things. And, that means we should at least try to prevent that and should not try to encourage that past healthy limits in the rest of our population.

My point was the OP using the same fake news the youtuber used in his video without fact checking the source of the fake news tabloid article. The OP then goes on a pointless rant about realism in video games and realistic looking weapons used by players in video games totally oblivious that it's the players themselves who ask for this realism and realistic looking weapons.

There are also modders who make custom content for these type game that support mods. The OP took everything to damn seriously to promote an idea based on fake news the youtuber video was based on. Spouts off fake news as facts to promote his idea.

Guns used in video games are NOT real guns yet somehow in the mind of the OP he thinks they should be banned from video games because they look to realistic and operate similar to how a real gun does? This is just plain idiotic and tells me the OP isn't in full control of his his mindset. He is trying to speak for all parents out there and pushing this idea instead of leaving it up the parents themselves.

This is why we have game ratings and have had them in place for almost 20 years now. This is why the news media no longer bashes video games because they are the ones along with politicians and parental advocacy groups pushed for a video game ratings system in the first place to help guide parents decisions before they buy these type games for thier kids. The OP is blantantly ignorant of this and has yet to even acknowledge it when other people here have mentioned it in their comments.

This thread should have been locked long before I went off on the OP for how stupid this thread actually is.

And, I'm also largely a fiscal conservative, so having to set even more industry standards and having to require some extra government oversight does chafe my shorts. But, dumb is out there and does take lives, often indiscriminately. :(

So you're basically saying a quite big percentage of the world's population is, with no doubt, dumb, and could potentially harm themselves without even noticing they're doing it....

That's kind of insulting, but you're right. I mean, I've seen it in real life, with my two eyes, so I've got plenty of proof.

But still, do we really need big baddy companies to keep dummies-dumb-dumbes from allowing their kids to play gory games, and then come here and say something along the lines of "Games bad because violence, lets get on a pillow fight instead"?

The thing is.. its easier to "blame" something on X or Y, rather than push funding into the actual reasons behind violence. The point is, that your argument was used by the christian society back in the 80´s to blame just about anything (murder, violence, etc) on D&D ie.. You should google it or look at youtube (I am sure you can find something about it)

You know... it was "realistic" that D&D and then players became obssed with their roles, they could not see the difference between reality and fantasy and then started to worship demons, kill people and whatnot....

The whole premise of your argument (and those old 80´s christian groups or even modern day game violence ones) is extremely flawed.

But I can tell you a funny sorry.. I did a study like 10 years ago on a primary school and I observed (this was in a break) a teacher, that told a 4th grader to stop playing (he was playing a CS wannabe game with no blood) the teacher said, it was much to realistic with guns etc..

Then the boy (whom had fled with is family from a war zone to my country) told the teacher.
"This is just a game, this is not realistic, I held that gun in real life and I saw people die"

Then the teacher stopped talking
