Wait, you seriously have to install Origin to play EA games? Even if you bought them on Steam?
I might be about to refund a game...

Ah yep, I see that now, the DRM disclaimer.

lol EA.
Spawn of Totoro 20 okt, 2021 @ 18:53
Yep, just like with Ubisoft games.

I try to buy them on their own platforms to avoid that issue.

It's the same with Ubisoft and having to install uPlay IIRC. Even if you purchase it on Steam, you still have to install their spyware-laden client - call Steam invasive all you want, at the very least it doesn't explicitly go rooting around in your files like Origin does. And that's nothing to say about how frequently cracked Electronic Arts and Ubisoft's encryption is.

Course, probably better to not give Electronic Arts or Ubisoft money to begin with. Make of that what you will.

Agreed. I've not bought or played anything from EA since Spore or from Ubisoft since Far Cry 3.

No regrets.

I unironically preordered Spore from Gamestop back in the day. I never received my copy. Just as well, IIRC that was the game that got them hit with a class action lawsuit because of SecuROM - also known as blatant malware on par with SpySheriff. Seriously, only a matter of time before someone sues someone over Denuvo doing similar ♥♥♥♥♥.

You'd be surprised how few people even remember SecuROM. I had to explain it to someone the other day.
Affronter 20 okt, 2021 @ 23:26
Bethesda too with Doom Infinite

Having to explain things pertaining to tech is in part why I stopped doing IT. Granted, I did that as volunteer work per a now defunct local non-profit I was involved in. But yeah, SecuROM is absolutely godawful - though from what I've seen Denuvo is a lot worse.

Course, I haven't had the misfortune to be on the receiving end of that particular malware. SecuROM though, bricked one of my PCs and damaged the disc drives of a couple others. In terms of malware I've dealt with, it's about as annoying as SpySheriff or that bitcoin miner trojan I had to take BleachBit to a while back - though those two didn't brick one PC and damage the disc drives of several others.

Seriously, anyone who unironically supports DRM might as well be in bed with black hats, because they unironically support malware. Almost as despicable as script kiddies.

You have to install it but it's not too intrusive. It just pops up with a splash screen for a second and that's it. It doesn't launch the full client or anything.
ʙᴜɴ.ᴇ 21 okt, 2021 @ 0:55
yep I own both a ubisoft and EA game on here and have both their launchers installed.

I don't even care they don't affect the game in any way.
Origin doesn't effect the game in any way so who cares?
Castyles 21 okt, 2021 @ 2:30
I never buy any EA and Ubisoft games for that reason.

Got Far Cry Primal once, though, when I didn't knew about that account ♥♥♥♥.

Installed it, unistalled it, asked for a refund and wiped out the Ubisoft registry from my machine. ♥♥♥♥ that.

Yes.
Just use Origin. No reason not to. It is just one more program on a computer made to have a gazillion programs on it.

You only have yourself to blame for not reading the yellow warning on the store page.

It's pretty hard to miss.
