I've never played a Mario game. What is it like?

[An Easy Target]

As title asks. I've seen gameplay, the name and influence is inescapable, and I have bought and played a game I assume is a tribute to Mario on my Steam account; however, I've never laid a controller on an actual, original, Mario game.

I'm pretty sure I don't need to play a Mario game, but I can't help but wonder what sort of experience I'm passing on.

Eh, I've never played one to completion but at the same time if you like platformers or memes you might want to check out one of the SNES, NES or CDi games.

You MUST play Super Mario Bros 3, its one of the best side scrolling platformers ever made imo.

Well, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a master piece of 2D platforming and you're missing out if you haven't played it yet.

Super Mario World was good, but I wasn't impressed that much with it. (I liked the semi-sequel, Yoshi's Island, better)

Then there's Super Mario 64 which was pretty revolutionary back in the day (first true 3D platformer) but could use a modern day remake.

Super Mario Galaxy was the next evolution for the series and it's certainly a good game.

- Countdown timer to your death if you're too slow

I played Mario with a Wii remote and that thing has far from perfect controls.
