It depends on the dream, I suppose. In some of them I recall colors vividly and in others I don't, so perhaps the latter are in monochrome. (I usually don't remember my dreams long enough to make a distinction between the two.)

This seems like a pretty genuine question which likely has ties to the "Tetris effect[www.google.com]".
Primarily with Tetris, some actual research has been conducted in seriously questioning why the things that people do, when they're awake, impress upon the shapes that their dreams take on - as well as how frequently this happens.
