I agree especially when it comes to the latest fad phones, however I also would argue that phones aren't generally overrated as it operates as both a camera, a means of communication, music and games "if you're desperate".

The only reason i got a cell phone is because home land lines don't exist any more. It went the way of the payphone.

Phones in general aren´t that bad - but the mobile versions are annoying, that´s why i don´t have any in private use.

Buying new iPhone every year is nonsense, but you pretty much need a phone nowadays, unless you're completely cut from everyone.

The rational thing is to buy a new phone when the old breaks and is out of warranty, or when it gets so old that it's functions are no longer on-par. (although if you use the phone just for calls and messages, then you don't really need a new phone)
