Well, they are made in the same ways other cartoons are, so yes. But showing kids "Mnemosyne", "Speed Grapher", "Monster" or "Akira" could have pretty nasty consequences.

Animated cartoons and "anime" are the same thing, "anime" literally means "animation" in Japanese. The fact that there are weeaboos, oh I am sorry, otakus who say they are completely different is mind blowing enough to consider trying to reason with them is a waste of time.

Apparently, there is a need to brand these characters, and put them under an umbrella.
There is a want to have them distinguished from cartoon characters, but am not sure why or how, and on which criteria that should be based.

You can't create criteria based on: "its from Japan", because that's not a property that is in direct relation to the work. Location can't have anything to do with it, because its not possible to see that it was made in Japan, just by looking at the piece.

Yes Anime is a Japanese "Cartoon"... the name Anime is just "Animated" abbreviated... it means the same thing.

Edit: Any bickering about what came first or not is just silly... the west didn't invent everything.

No. I would rather not disrespect any fan-base. If they want to call it anime, that's entirely up to them, but then they may explain it as well, because I don't understand it. I consider it a motion picture.

Which is why I find it curious, about whether or not anime and cartoons should be considered the same thing. Or if people thinks it's the same thing.
