Some people confuse the definitions of geek and nerd though there is much overlap.
Depending on what kind of expertise is needed either one might be considered as a compliment by the target of the apparent hatred.

Calling someone a nerd is usually derogatory because in effect they called out for the lifestyle they lead and the way they behave which leaves little room for doubt on how intolerant some people are about what others do with themselves.

Often the idea of what a nerd is leads to some people pointing out all the negative aspects they see in such a person just for fun, basically a bully looking to get their jollies in putting someone else down.

Some like to down play it, some others like to play it up, but it is what it is.
