"Videogames help you gain knowledge."
So apparently there are some people out there that think videogames should be taught in school....some even thinking they can help you "gain knowledge."

As someone who grew up gaming and even has gaming addiction, Im strongly against this. Mostly because... what the hell can videogames teach us? More dopamine high?

No, CSGO won't teach you how a gun works.

No, playing Assasins creed won't teach you about history.

And no, playing fighting games won't teach you how to fight.

These same people would also shut up when I ask them, "Well, why don't we make/ play videogames that are actually MADE for education?"

I know of personal experience about educational "games." Well, only one actually.

video games are not educational unless they're made for that exact purpose.

Playing video games actually helped me improving my English, German and Dutch.
It also teached me to speak properly in another language even grammar.
It builded up my self convidence, the way I interacted with people and in general, I changed from a shy, desperate and depressed young boy to someone who is strong, smarter and more social.
Fool!

You underestimate the power of a true gamer!

Mario taught me to type. In a school, even.

Maybe you should stop being so closed-minded. Edutainment has been a thing for a long time. Never heard of Math Blaster or Reader Rabbit? Carmen Sandiego?

Video games taught me more about life than all those boring books I was forced to read.

Entertainment can be educational, but it won't teach you the basisc.

You don't learn how to do any direct occupation in school either.
But the examples you give are nothing more than poor cherry picked generalizations.

Sure, some games are meant solely for entertainment. But did you consider that games can, as previously mentioned, help you immerse yourself in/learn more about a language while having fun playing them ?
Believe it or not teaching is not circumstantial, all teaching is teaching. In the same light, a lot of simulator games can teach you real aspects of real world operations. Sure, you can't learn any of those things just by playing videogames; you also can't learn any hobby just by reading a piece of paper. But that doesn't mean you can't learn more about it and gain interesting knowledge on said subject.

I think that is the extent of teaching in videogames. It's not always apparent, but you could even say certain games improve your intellect and decision making as well as hand/eye coordination skills. Did you know, chess is a game ? And there's videogame adaptations of it, sometimes with extra rules ? Sudoku as well ! Those two are almost interchangeable and have the same effect on people.

I hope that clears it up.

Language is universal and can be see through all different mediums. It is no surprise trying to expose oneself to different mediums in order to learn a language can help improve the usage of said language. Same way social games can help some people improve their social skills.

If I remember correctly I saw some language education videogames on here.

I believe FPS games DID improve my aim irl, I won a toy at the funfair because of it :3.
gaming addiction = coffee addiction = nonsense?.. i heard people talk about coffee addiction but that's metnak - you can't be addicted to it because it doesn't have the necessary chemicals.. and so is alcohol. as for gaming addiction, i think it's the same - me for example, this month i started to watch more movies and play games a little less.. so now i'm addicted to movies as well?.. wtf dude?..

So your argument is that video games cannot teach anyone anything except well actually sometimes they do? But it doesn't count, I guess?

Just because you're not addicted to something doesn't mean no one is.

Can CSGO teach me how to be a SWAT member or use a gun?
