is it me or the quality of video games has gone down i remember there being a huge selection of great games for the genesis and the playstation 1 era i loved the story based single players could play for hours there it feels like gaming is dying i barely find my self engaged in anything most of these games are either trying to copy another game instead of them trying to do their own thing unlike back then when each game had its own spark decided to make this post public to see if there are others who feel the same way as i i remember ninja shadow of darkness as a kid legacy of kain soul reaver spyro the dragon X-men 2 clone wars for the genesis toe jam and earl battle toads and double dragon spyro medievil sonic adventure 2 please be nice if you will comment here so others can enjoy the discussion and be open minded

Nostalgia is a heck of thing.
Here's the thing . Back in the console era.. especially back then, your awareness of the the games coming out was quite limited. The Nintendo, Super Nintendo, MS, and Genesis all had a Crap, ♥♥♥♥♥, and mediocre games as the majority of their library. You just were never aware of them. For Every SMB3 there's 4 Solomon's Keys, and 2 Amagons. Fore EVery Double Dragon, There's 4 Chakan's.

And I find it funny that you're even complaining since there has been over the past decade a revival of games of that era, so. I'm not sure what the problem is. If you liked those games, there plenty of those games available right now, in addition to those games.

If i was born in the 90's i would only play games like Sonic, Mario and Mega Man. Not those NES/Famicom type of games filled with knock back, garbage platforming, and those weird looking cartridges. looking at you Little Red NES

I mean, tons of games copied other games. Yes, there were original titles back then, just as there are original titles today that do things differently.

But I can't count how many clones, or games that played too similarly to other games, or games that were obviously rip offs or "inspired by" other games from back in the day. Too many to count.

I think you've just got those nostalgia goggles on and seem to be cherry picking from certain games.

There's also the simple truth that medicocre is forgotten.
You'll remember a good slice of a cake. and you'll remember a terrible slice of cake, but you won't remember the dozens of 'okay' cakes.

Its why in entertainment they say the worst thing you can be is 'Okay'. Either succeed spectacularly, or fail spectacularly. Doing okay means you will do okay, but no one will be able to remember what you did.

Personally I've been around since Space Invaders consoles first came out and overall gamers - particularly PC gamers - have never had it so good.

1) Thanks to Steam and GOG a large number of those older games are still purchaseable and playable today
2) As well as deluging us with oceans of mediocre tat (and worse) Valve's business model for Steam has unleashed a tsunami of creativity. Some top games - Tower of Monsters, Depth, Castle Crashers - may not have been available to purchasers two or three decades ago.
3) Although recently computer games have become more expensive in real terms - and that's official UK data - overall quality computer games are far more affordable than they were pre Steam
4) There has been a bit of a hiatus for the top studios recently. It's been years since Rockstar, Bethesda, or CD Projekt Red (we're all waiting for Cyberpunk 2077) brought out a top AAA single player game. But they will come ...
5) I still have a fondness for some older titles myself. Ongoing debates about Best RPG ever still regularly name check Baldur's Gate and Planetscape. However having gone back to Morrowind and Oblivion after playing Skyrim (Elder Scrolls) I found Morrowind unplayable and whilst Oblivion is pretty good Skyrim is far better.

Older games still holds up in some ways - I re-bought the Settlers (original) on UPlay and it's still a great game.

Start Running makes a good point in that people tend to remember the good games and forget the mediocre and bad ones. I know he'd disagree but also publishing costs meant that the lowest tiers dreck on Steam never saw the light of day pre Steam - although there were some notoriously awful games back in the day (Atari's ET anyone ?) as well as many mediocre and poor ones.

And as for long term playability - Bethesda.

It's you. I think the quality of games hasn't changed much. I've been playing games since the 80s and I still play games from every decade, though most are from the last decade.

That time never existed. Heck, I own the Philips Videopac G7000 (Magnavox Odyssey² in America) from the 70s (it was my brothers) and if you look at most of the library, you'll see they're Atari clones.
Same goes for the 80s/90s, there were many Doom, Dune, Test Drive clones, for example.

Put away those rose tinted glasses, your nostalgia meter is out of line.

regarding the interest in gaming its still there i have beaten witcher 3 with 100hrs of gameplay i have beated rdr2 with almost 70hrs i have accepted that im older now i am engaged in reading and working out it just feels like there is less single player games now days than back then iguess

Thank you all for commenting on this its been really fun and great to read throughout all of your comments guess i do have to work on my library alittle bit it still was great to see it from the point of view of others :)

I've played video games since the first prototype hit the pinball arcades back in the early 70's.
It has been a lot of fun watching games evolve into what they are today. I am probably one of the first ever video game addicts.

The thing is though is that people play games for different reasons and even those change with time for an individual, popular games sometimes are like popular music... really bad... but that is just one persons subjective opinion. To me at this time I prefer a game like Warframe over Dark Souls... Witcher 3 is just a glorified dating sim to me so I have no interest at all in playing it.

So making sweeping judgmental statements seems silly when referring to games in general, far too often I donned the rose colored glasses only to dig out a system and play a game and go "wow this is lame now" but at the time it was great as there was nothing else to compare it to.

It's only logical that there is more multiplayer now. Back then the infrastructure wasn't there and even if it was, it wasn't widespread. The most multiplayer people had were co-op on the console and later LAN-parties.

Nowadays with the small world due to internet, it's much easier to play multiplayer. And it seems many gamers like to play multiplayer. So naturally, these games get made.

Personally I stopped playing multiplayer about 15 years ago because I was tired of people screaming and yelling because they didn't get their way. I don't have enough gaming time to spend that time in an environment that I don't enjoy, I play games to relax and enjoy myself. I haven't had a shortage of single player games, though.

It might seem to you that things are like that, but I'd be very curious where you are looking. If you only look at the popular charts, you might be right. But popular games aren't necessarily good games, nor are good games necessarily popular.

I had just installed the game and a friend is telling me in voice chat about chatting up the ladies and having sex, while sounding a bit too creepy about it, and I thought to myself " I don't want to play that " saw the broad on the bed and looked out the veranda.. walked out to take a look and jumped off to my death. Uninstalled game and never played again.
