It's more on the depressing side of things then realistic. The cutesy look is just a facade - it gets quite dark later on.
This game made me depressed recently for like 2 days. Because the things it needs you to do to survive.

Bioshock 2 Mirvena's den DLC will have you bawling your eyes out at the end. Tbh most of the 1 and 2 and even infinte the tapes have tons of sad backstories
Same to an extent with fallout series. Terminals and holotapes will tell you the story. Honest Hearts the survivor and all the tattered pages you find around the canyon just make the dlc great.
Sonic games have their down points
Again mostly any game that doesn't focus on it but still adds it out of nowhere usually does a good job at portraying it.
